General punto whistling noise

The timing belt and tensioner appear to have been the cause of the noise. Now they have been replaced the strange noise has disappeared. Thanks to everyone for their input, and full Marks to Brendan W!

The replacement of the timing belt and tensioner appears to have resulted in the car running less well though. It's only subtle, but it seems run a bit lumpy and lurchy which is noticeable especially when accelerating in lower gears. I'd alwys been really impressed with how receptive it was when accelerating. Seems to be a slight hesitation now when sticking the foot down.

Can anyone tell me if this is kind of thing is to be expected following a belt and tensioner change?

Thanks,

Dave King

Could just be that everything is new and tight. My HGT is the same as the cambelt was only change last month. It doesn't misfire or anything just a slight tightness that only I would notice.

Can anyone tell me how much of a ball ache will it be to adjust the timing belt now that everything has been put back together?

Everything has to come off again unfortunately. Two hours including cuppa breaks and lost nut time. Have you spoken with the people who did it?

Bugger. Not spoken to the garage yet. And they offered to accept a cash payment – so no receipt, or avenue for official recourse either.

Drat!

Small outfits rely on word of mouth , lack of receipt is not neccessarily a problem. There is a way to check without taking everything apart. There are timing marks on the flywheel so you can set the crank at tdc and then take the cover off the timing belt and see if it is at the correct position. The flywheel marks are visible through a hole in the clutch housing.
