Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

Firstly, in order to improve any braking system you need to make the contact area bigger, hence bigger disc's with bigger callipers can have bigger pads, therefore a great increase in braking efficiency. It also has the benefit of dissipating heat quicker as there is a greater surface area being cooled down by more air, I have read a very good technical web site on this from some guy who set up rally cars but can't find it just now. :)

It stands to reason that the brake callipers from a Punto GT turbo which is not only a hell of a lot faster than a Cinq sporting, but also heavier, will have much better brakes, I need better brakes as my car is on a par with a standard Punto turbo, if not a little faster. :D

And yes Dave they are vented, so much less brake fade, as lets be honest Cinq brakes are not the best I've ever encountered in my time and mine worked much better than any other Cinq I've driven, they just were not up to the job of stopping you quickly from speeds the Cinq wasn't meant for, i.e. cross country with lots of heavy braking after hard accelerating etc etc (y)

Added to this, I also used Goodridge stainless steel brakelines, there is no flex in the brake pipes so a much firmer pedal is also a great increase in driver confidence. I also used Castrol Response Super DOT 4 synthetic fluid as I have found it to be excellent with very high boiling point, which again stops brake fade.

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

Well fitted my brakes....

GT calipers with Tarox drilled and groved discs and tarox pads (for now as I got sent the wrong mintex ones :bang: )

Was a doddle to fit them and got some nice Stainless Steel Goodrige brake lines which also look v.nice

The important bit... what are they like?

In one word- Amazing!

To put it in context was out braking a Cooper S on every corner and i'm guessing they are supposed to have damn good brakes to...

P.S Didn't fit the bake Hose's looked like a pain to do

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

Have you replaced the rear Cinq drums with discs or just the front discs?

Has anyone done rear disc conversions on a Cinq? Lol

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

I have done nothing with the rear drums as the rear brakes do so little it's almost pointless for my purposes to change them. The only reason someone may who's car is used only on the road is for cosmetic reasons but you can't see the brakes on my car due to the wheel design. I think Red Dot may have grooved drums tho which may offer an improvement over standard.

However I believe Rallycinq has a rear disc conversion as that is required for his purposes.

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

u can also do them on the 900ccs as well my one had the conversion done just after i bought the car great improvements but u have to watch out for locking up i had it happen a few times on moi and wasnt very nice

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

you can out brake loadsa things with them on :D great fun apart from locking up at a roundabout

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

My handbrake works quite well too ;)

But back on topic a bit I would recomend these before engines mods i got it the wrong way round.lol

Aaron have you taking yours for a spin yet?

Is it just me or right at the start at the first pictures, the finished job, why do the pads you've fit do not fit in the calipers. They look a tad on the small side.

Re: I've fitted Punto GT callipers/disc's!

They are in fact the wrong pads which we have both found out (oredered from the same place) I think what they have done is sent pads for the back instead of the front which I have been told are the same as cinq std pads...

I'm currently running some Tarox pads instead but will get the right ones soon...

I'll get some pics up of mine tomorrow :)

You are 100% correct, this has now been rectified as I just had every thing together and stuck it all in but as the car had no head at the time it didn't really matter.

Yeah Jamie took the car for a spin tonight and it stops a hell of alot better now! It also goes pretty well, but will need a few more miles than the 8 I did to get the ECU up to speed, plus I had to cut short my shake down test as one of the back drums decided to stick on fairly firmly so had to strip it down and give it a good clean out, must have been from sitting so long even tho the handbrake was left off.

Also, as the brake is a bigger diameter than the original, it means the mechanical advantage is greater, so you get more braking for the same pressure.
