This has been bugging me today simply because I'm fairly certain Michael J Fox was always the preferred choice but due to tv commitments had to pull out. The replacement didn't work out and Michael J Fox managed to juggle his work to do both. I seem to remember it led to stupidly long days for him though...

I think Katies explanation is technically correct.
This other chap was indeed a second choice to Fox - but first officially confirmed in the role.
It wasn't working out, so with a good chunk of filming done they binned him and persuaded Fox to take on the film on top of his TV commitments with Family Ties...
If only I could remember his name though...(and no, I'm not going to cheat)
