Technical Project Bucket.

Frenched in badges eh, yeah I like that idea. This would work well wherever they were placed so up to you Julie, but I'm happy to do the work (y)

Will give you a call ref. the insurance.
hi vern....if it is possible to recess them then i think a bit higher up on c pillar....sorry guys i now need both badges so no spare one available. bucket is going to end up being one of the best ones around at this rate.....sorry vern i keep adding to your workload, perhaps i can auction the bill in case anyone else feels like paying it for me. don't all rush at once.

Bucket is booked in with SPL for the first stage of the bodyshell preparation, 1st July, and the strip down has begun. :)

They are going to have hime for three weeks though so I will have to find something else to do in that time :rolleyes:AhhhhAhhhh.

Will post some pics after Panda camp. (y)

hi vern,
thanks for pics......looks like there is enough actual metal still in existence so hopefully it will be worth saving bucket. hope the 3 weeks he is away being dipped and dunked and whatever else won't be a problem for you. julie

Hi Julie,

Yes he's looking pretty solid in there isn't he!

We've got plenty to do while he's away don't you worry.

Well with next Monday being the day that I take Bucket to have his dip in the bath he had to be stripped down to a completely bare shell by the end of this week. Well we finished today so it's nice to be ahead of schedule for a change.
Transporting Bucket all the way to Birmingham was a challenge in itself. Oslo is still the only vehicle I have with a towbar so I was not going to be able to use the four wheeled trailer I usually hire. Even though Bucket no longer weighs too much on his own, combined with the trailer, plus the fact that the trailer is much wider than a Panda and would resist Oslo's attempts to turn it, I had to find an alternative.
The hire centre had nothing suitable but some of you may remember I have a little speed boat and trailer. So this morning the boat was offloaded on to the drive and the trailer went to the workshop.
I gave the trailer a bit of a service, greased the wheel bearings, that sort of thing. At the same time I moved the axle forward about 18" to help balance Bucket's weight compared to the boat. Later this afternoon with the aid of a man at each wheel arch, bucket was lifted on, adjusted, then strapped down.

We have found very little rot in him, he may look pretty shabby but in fact he's a very solid Panda, so I'm quietly confident that in three weeks time I'll be collecting 99% of whats going to Birmingham on Monday. :)

I did find one small hole in the L/H front footwell, plus the usual place at the back of the sills has started to go, but they have never been welded so far!

The last pic is pretty poor I know but you can just make out how the rollers that the boat usually sits on, when turned through 90', sit neatly in the box section that the front of the leaf springs usually sit in.

Oslo has no trouble towing this setup at all so I'm looking forward to the journey on Monday, just bringing him home to keep on the drive has already raised a few eyebrows. I'll just tell the neighbours that the rust in Oslo has got so bad that I now have to take a spare bodyshell with me wherever I go :p.

P.S. Julie (Panda Woman) has agreed to let me show him at the N.E.C in November, so I now have a target for Bucket's completion.

hi vernon, glad that bucket hasn't got too many holes or rust.....ingenious idea for transporting him......hope your trailer can be put back to how it was for your boat....you could have just come up with a neat little sideline though and hire the trailer out to other people who need to do the same sort of thing......mind you there probably aren't that many other people as daft as me out there.

would it be possible to have tinted glass at the back (rear window and back passenger windows) so as my dog doesn't get too hot in the summer?

drive carefully on monday and i hope you don't cause too many accidents with other drivers staring in disbelief at what they are seeing.

fingers crossed for the big bath......julie

Hi Julie,

Yes the axle can be put back to it's original position quite easily. I was due to put the boat and trailer on eBay but may have to keep at least the trailer now.

I'm way ahead of you with the tinted windows ;), will give you a call later about that.

Dave, I'm way ahead of you too! Was holding it back as a surprise though :( , you're too clever for your own good!

Julie / Vern
The surprise has to be shagpile seats because as the owner of 2 collies I know it is the only way of disguising dog hair.
Here is Alfie ready the big Panda unveil at Crufts!

hi dave,

love the picture....my dog is a whippet so no chance of glasses or a hat staying on her.know what you mean about the dog hairs though. julie

hi palio....no roof rack on bucket so dog will have to go inside, though she can probably run faster than bucket can move......perhaps i should tie her lead to the front and let her pull him along...would save on petrol. julie

Huh...Panda-boat...now there's an idea...

Get a 4x4 transfer box and instead of the prop'shaft going to an axle have a propeller on the end to provide drive in the water. You can either use the thin front wheels as rudders or lock the front brakes on and use the rear sunroof as a cabin to control the car from a traditional detachable rudder hanging off the back. Doable. :)

Wheels as rudders wouldn't really work...however, rigging up a rudder would certainly be doable - maybe even link the existing wheel into a similar setup for outboards.

Little bit of a hull fabricated, and improved weight distribution and we're away...

(weight low to avoid capsize, and a little extra weight aft to improve trim...unless we go Panda-Sub)
