PC does not load Windows XP

Sods Law, I fix the mother-in-laws laptop, now my pc doesnt want to work. Think its jealous?
PC turns on, goes through the motions of passing POST test, but does not beep. Next screen shows the "Windows did not load correctly" apology.
I can choose SAFE Mode, SAFE Mode with neworking, etc. No matter what I pick (I have tried on all options), it BSOD (too quick to read) then reboots.

I have tried booting from the XP disc, I choose repair, it loads something, asks me to type EXIT to finish and reboot. Then I am back to square one.

Any ideas guys?

Check inside the case for loose connections - ram, pci cards and hard drive cables.

Probably the recovery console that loads when you chose repair, when in the recovery console try checking the disk for error's by typing chkdsk c: /F

Yes but try actually reseating everything. I spend weeks trying to figure out random black screen when trying to load windows - turned out to be a loose sata cable.

My main drive is not C, damn it and i cant remember what it is :bang: I guess i have to go though all the letters

Forget that, its now checking the correct drive.
"volume appears in good condition and was not checked use /p to check", so i did.

It has found one or more errors on the volume, how do i repair this?

is it amd and are you running service pack 3

i had the same problem as you and it was becuase of a glitch in service pack 3 that didnt like amd's

i had the same problem as you and it was becuase of a glitch in service pack 3 that didnt like amd's

Actually that is because some lazy manufacturers reused images from intel machines, when sp3 loads it loads the intel driver which crashes amd machines. Clean installs are fine.

could possibly be that

give me a min and ill do some more research it was a long time ago i had this problem

Ah,your right, i will see if i can do it after this chkdsk is finished, its taking a long time.

I let chkdsk run all night, (well til 2am). Turned the PC on this morning and it worked!!!! That is a bloody handy tool! :slayer:
I am going to use evey scan that i have to make sure everything is working properly tonight (after work).

Great stuff.
You probably have some bad sectors on your hard drive. Chkdsk will have sorted out files that have got corrupted as a result and will mark those sectors so they aren't used in future.
