Technical Panda cambelt and pump quote to much ??

We had my wife's mk3 done 18 months ago. belt, water pump and a leaky seal while they were in there. Almost £600 as I recall. Not a Fiat specialist. Quoted 3.5hrs. A 'good' independent garage in an expensive area. I believe Fiat quote 3hrs.

Officially

checking the timing belt every 60,000km or every two years and, where appropriate,

changing the belt every 120,000km or after five years

or, in the case of vehicles driven under harsh operating conditions, after 120,000km or four years.

The labour time for changing the timing belt, two and a half hours.

If an experienced mechanic using neumatic tools can't change one of these in an hour they shouldn't be working on your car

I think you missed the water pump and leaky seal element of my story.

And this was in 2012.

On old cars, a cam belt change could easily cost more than they're worth.

My GP is at 90k and 16 years without ever having a cam belt change, of course it needs changing, but my guess is that it'll probably do 160,000 before snapping. Its non VVT. I'll do it if the water pump goes.

Doubtful 12 years later it's that price and even back then I would have to question what kind of tobacco is he smoking.
With all that stuff that's a 2k job minimum by a back-yard grease ball, and a private garage or dealership wouldn't be cheaper.

I had always intended to do Becky's timing belt, water pump etc myself but, just for fun, got quotes from the local main dealer and some of the local wee garages. The quote from the main dealer was "silly" but I later established that they were pricing it up from their menu pricing system. It lists the cam belt change at one price and the water pump at another similar price. Didn't take me long to realize they were not taking into account that the prep work was almost identical for each job in isolation rather than just charging once for the strip down and adding a bit on for the waterpump.

Nope

Book time by fiat for both is 2.5H and that's over generous

Seals are right there cam, cover or crank

Put a pick in pull the old out and tap a new in is still easy to do all three within 2.5H

The likes of SKF VCMC 02206-2 are dirt cheap

Also where are you? We had to get it done at short notice in an expensive area. I’ll find the receipt tomorrow.

If you want to que jump you wil have to pay more

I am in Cheshire

2 weeks is the lead time at a reputable garage like 1 stop

A quote of a clutch in a Kia Picanto a couple of weeks ago was £460, which although also not that big of a job is still much more involved and the parts are more expensive

Here we seen some silly prices post pandemic

But if you shop around you should find £200-300 labour possible

Yeah post pandemic everything has gone up. I now live in France and services are at criminal prices. The aforementioned panda’s main seal has popped. In the U.K. I can get a recon box from a Fiat specialist for £435 all in plus Labour. In France the ‘box alone is £1000. The clutch is usually £170 here as opposed to £80 in the U.K. but they’ve given me a ‘discount’ down to £80. They’re making so much on the gearbox thy can afford to… Fortunately I have a ‘friendly’ British mechanic doing all the labour for £340.

If you're anywhere near Norwich, try Italicar. I got my 100hp done there 2 years ago...£144 inc parts for belt, tensioner and water pump.
Which sounds very reasonable as there's over £50 in parts,
Update, collected my car earlier I was charged £220 labour which is fine
Which using book values and taking the cam cover off is about right

Fiat Slough £850 for a cambelt water pump and service

What included in the service?

Hi all, just an update I am going to try to upload a movie of me driving the car slowly in 1st and 2nd gear to try and show the clicking and also whirring noise, the garage said the gearbox oil was low and metallic and basically I needed a recon one my question is should I top up the oil or drain it and put new in, I,ve never done it before but seen a good youtube movie how to, I really don't need the hassle of paying for a replacement. The clunking sound on braking and full lock the garage said they could find no problem, I suspect it was the struts they fitted last year and just nipped up a bolt or two and it's gone. MOT on the 8th so will see. Did the movie last night while it was quiet, I could do a longer of specific areas if it helps. Is it possible to upload short movies direct ? Ok my first time using it, should work now hopefully.

It says "this video is private". You'll need to change settings on youtube.

Video fine, unfortunately it's inconclusive

Could be a few things like gearbox or wheel bearing, we need to narrow it down

Does the frequency of the rumble follow engine RPM or road speed

Does it make a noise with the car stationary and the gearbox in neutral clutch up

Does the noise alter if you push the clutch down

Does it make a noise turning left as well as right

If you zig zag the car a bit does the sound change from left to right

Does the noise alter on acceleration or coasting

You can re-do a drive with the windows open ,or tape a phone inside the bonnet to get a better recording.
think I'll try it with my dashcam on. It might be best for me to start a new thread as the original one was about my cambelt ?
