Hi, I’m after some help with a fault code which has come up on my 2018 Ducato 115 Multijet 2. I’ve searched the Ducato tech posts and can’t find anything relevant. The van is a camper and has only covered 11k miles and I’ve only done about 600 of those. Anyway, 120 miles in to a 200 mile trip the amber light came on with a ‘check engine’ message. I stopped and had a look over it, couldn’t find anything obvious so as it was driving alright completed the journey. I read the code when I got home and it’s P0488 ‘EGR THROTTLE CONTROL CIRCUIT A RANGE/PERFORMANCE’. I’m hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction for resolving the fault.
Cheers

P0488-72 refers to the High Pressure EGR valve being blocked or stuck open. Check to see if it is either mechanically seized, or not functioning correctly.

If you have Multiecuscan, then you can test the functionality in the Actuator tab and also check to see if the Actual position tracks the Desired position as a live test in the Parameters/Graph tab whilst driving the vehicle.

One question for you – is there any sign of soot in the exhaust pipe – check by wiping out the tip with a white paper towel?

Thanks for the reply, I checked the exhaust yesterday (after reading other posts on here), and it’s quite clean, certainly not sooty. I don’t have MES, is there another way short of dismantling the valve?
Do you know if it’s only Fiat dealers who can upload the most up to date ECU software?

My understanding is if you are looking to update the software then that would be best done by FIAT PRO. Good to hear you have no soot in the exhaust - as you are probably aware your engine is a dual EGR variant and are aware of the consequences of soot in the exhaust. Depending on your inclination/expertise, in my mind every owner of a Ducato should have MES (Muliecuscan) and learn how to use it. It would help you to confirm fairly quickly what the issue is. The fault code points at the HP EGR being seized or not tracking correctly - so you could just decide to dismantle the valve an have a look.
Edit: Sorry - I just noticed your engine is a 2.0 L not 2.3L so please disregard my assumption it was a dual EGR engine.

This is very unlikey to be a software issue.
Your engine only has one egr valve(if is 2.0 litre not 2.2) , thank goodness.
Check wiring to egr valve , only then consider a new valve.

Check not damaged by water ingress.
Does the code clear using your code reader?
If so does it come straight back ie mil on again straight away?

Thank you, the code cleared and I’ve just come back from a run, which included a thrash up the bypass plus some slow speed through the town and it hasn’t returned.
I’m quite new to the vehicle and don’t have a workshop manual yet, can you tell me where the EGR valve is on the 2 litre engine please?
Cheers

Sorry i said egr valve you said throttle valve they work together to reduce emmisions.
You want to find your throttle valve - Google will help you

It’s a no adblue van. I was quite pleased, when I got the van, that I wouldn’t have to put adblue in it, after doing some reading on this forum that was a bit premature!

Hi,
Oh in that case you will have to look into the egr set up on the 2.0 engine.
Fingers xed in the meantime.
Best
