Hi this forum seems to be the best place to ask for PC related questions.

Ok my problem is i don't use Redhat to access the internet but just windows XP. Now i'm slowly coverting to RedHat but would like to use the internet, but i cannot get anywhere, and within the terminals i can't ping anything.

I own a cable DSL 4 port router and use this to share the internet connections.

Can someone help me out with how i configure up the internet, i got to some place where you put a password and username but i'm on NTL and it doesn't ask for a password.

Any help appreciated or a walk through.

Thanks

Joske

Just make sure either the gateway (if you're using one), or your PC is set for DHCP (so it can get an IP address off the cable modem...

Point your web browser at http://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html and run through the registration screens. Use ntl-ct8-cj486 for the cable modem and enter your username & PIN. At the end, reboot the cable modem so it gets it's config file off the network and gives you an IP which allows full access to the internet.

Try Red Hat Fedora Core 3. Rock solid and free. I will be using this on my new Linux box :)

Get it Here

I require Red Hat Server on my PC. Rob will the one you subject also act as a server, as red hat 9 can be what you require and i required the server package.

Anyway back to the original subject i tried entering the url in the address bar and it said its not connected etc, same goes with anything i put in the address bar.

Any way can i set up DHCP on redhat while logged in as root? How do i set internet configurations up?

This is a list of the packages included with Fedora Core 2, 3 probably has many more and of course up to date versions. Consider Fedora as the direct successor to RH9, in as much as it will have all you need and more :)

Would love to help you on your internet connection problem but I have no Linux system up and running here and it's been ages since I tinkered with one. The last time I had RH9 running, it automatically detected my ADSL wireless router and I had to do no set-up, so I had nothing to do. I'm sure Daz will help you out :)

My Linux box construction starts tomorrow when I collect the new drives for the prospective box ;)

I'm also considering trying out Solaris 10 from Sun Microsystems on my 64 bit system... I'm a sucker for punishment ;)

Daz

Ok i am now using my Red Hat 9 OS to access the Internet. Ok tried your way daz the /sbin/ifconfig and it worked.

However what i did was i activated the DHCP and made the PC find automatically the IP and had to reboot everything. Hence why it didn't work. Had to reboot router aswell.

No password or username required.

Much appreciated for the help though Daz.

One more question if i leave my printer plugged into the USB at the back of my pc and boot into RedHat i get a error message and i can't get out of it so i have to reset the pc. So the only way redhat will boot up is if i unplug the printer.

Any ideas.

Joske

Unplug your printer from your USB port.

Click on the KDE menu, then "system settings" then "printing" and click on "new" and then enter a name for your printer and click next. You need to highlight the name in the list (usually /dev/lp0) then click next.

You then need to select your printer from a list, you just need to select which printer model it is and it will automatically select the right driver for you. At the bottom of the window select Generic UNIX LPD Print System (default)

Turn off

Plug in USB printer
Reboot

Daz

Umm...lol

Do you have a choice when you first boot?

You will have to bear with me as it been about a year since i got rid of my linux system.

Daz

Do you have it?

If you can't find it try...

/etc/inittab

It should give you a list of options, from memory its 5 for the GUI.
