Right...since I've got no answers, I have found out myself.
It is on the right side the cap to fill the carter, top front the engine.
Have to remove the air hose to access the 3 screws and lose the black metal cover; then need a 27mm soquet to lose the filter cover. I advise to put some rags underneath to avoid anu drop of oil on the belts. removing that cover, you access the filter cartridge. Have to do the job twice first time because no FIAT dealer will tell you which model of cartridge is in your car (they are 2 different models).

Oil filter - £13.00
Engine oil - £27.00 (Castrol 5W30 ACEA A3/B4) Selenia WR recomended have not found even on Fiat Dealers!

Well, £40.00 / 30min job agains £210.00 FIAT Dealer wanted to charge me. Absurd!!

Shocking quote from FIAT dealer.. let's hope you haven't invalidated your warranty by using non-standard oil!

I just logged on to tell you exactly what you have written as I saw the thread yesterday, and warn you about the 2 filters. I bought both the first time and then returned the one I didnt use. Have to dig out the receipt every oil change as I cant remember which one it is.

Also in 3 oil changes I haven't been given the same oil twice and each garage is convinced it is what they use.
Tutella 10w-40
Tutella 5w-30
Magnatec 5w-30
From memory but I know none are the recommended brand or grade.

Hello mates,

Thanks for the answers. Yes, an absurd the price they charge for the first service.

About the filter cartridge, I have opened once to check which one was there and bought the correct one. Take note of code and even took a picture for the next time.

About the oil, well, believe me, I have been inside some service workshops and most fiat dealers service do not use the SELENIA WR as recomended. They use normally Castrol or Mobil, cheaper.
The most important is not the brand but the correct specification. 5W30 ACEA A1/B1 - C2 or superior. I have used Castrol ACEA A3/B4 synthetic. No less important, do not mix different oils after changing. Try to use always the same, mainly if you change from based synthetic to full synthetic.

And finally, about the warranty, the normal manufacturer warranty for this car is 1 year, + 2 yrs from the dealer, who has a huge list of exclusions, meaning does not cover anything, so, since my Qubo already completed 1 year, I did the first service myself, saving money and doing better job, I am sure, than they "say" they do.

All my cars and bikes, never trusted dealers for service. The service is a SH*T! No matters with brand, manufacture or workshop. They charge you £60.00 labour hour and pay $6.00 to their mechanics. And mechanics are like family's doctor, if you do not know him enough, better do not use his service.

Your entitled to your opinions however alot of what you say is incorrect in many respects.

Dealer near me charges £115 for 1.3mj engine service, labour is £50 (£40 if your friends with them) and techs get £9.25 p/hr.
With this service I get screenwash, all wheels off and hubs lubricated, error codes read (printout supplied & signed) service counter reset (in the ECU counter) car washed, hooved and collected and delivered back to me.

Warranty is (as stated) 3 years of which the first 2 are manufacture based however when dealer serviced you stand a good chance of any goodwill and 3rd years warranty always ask for service history straight off.

By doing your own service (your car your choice) you have nullified your warranty in many respects

Right...since I've got no answers, I have found out myself.

the location of the oil filter on the 1.3mj is well documented throughout this forum.

You should speak to the dealer that was meant to have done a 2yr 17000 mile service on our panda shortly before we bought it (off a family friend). The oil was still dirty, they recommended the pads needed doing (went on to do another 20000miles) and didnt stamp the book.

I should imagine very few people would get an error sheet print out volunteered at service time especially as the standard charge for this seems to be £70.

Yes, you are right about nullified my warranty. I respect your opinion as well, but I am quite sure (as said in my warranty book) I have got 1 year warranty manufacture and 2yrs dealer. And the price for the first service is £210.00. Well, even if it was £115.00 as you have, I would not do it in a dealer.
The counter service reset itself after 60miles.
By the way, both cars, Qubo and 500 I have bought from DESIRA Group in North London, I have got the same warranty. For the 500 my quote for the 1st service was £190.00. Labout hour there is £60. Right, I apologize, I have exaggerated about techs hours.
Different opinions mates, I respect as well. But I have got different informations so about warranty and prices.
Well, maybe better I make some friends in a Dealer,

Obviously every case is individual & maybe the dealer in question has a side to the story? Seems strange they said pads need done as surely they would have to pay as you didn't have car then?

Agree but there are good techs/garages around(y)

not the counter in the ECU though which is what i check not the instrument cluster.

How many litres of Oil does the 1.3M-jet engine take guys?

Also how many litres and which grade for the 5 speed gearbox if anyone can advise?

I would look but despite my car being advertised as a 1 owner car, the handbook was not supplied and is not available, so I cant check. (n)

I presume changing from an unknown oil to a fully synthetic oil for engine and gearbox will be ok?

Hi Humour,
I've just done my third oil & filter change over the weekend at 20,000 miles. The sump and gearbox is combined and takes 3.2 litres. The best value oil I've found is from Euro Carparts - Triple QX Syn Plus C2 5W-30 ( No 52177 6051). This is ACEAC2 low SAPS oil (same as Fiat spec) and is less than half the price of the Fiat recommended Selenia WR P.E. 5W-30 (£45/4litres). Fiat dealer wanted just under £100 for oil & filter change, that's why I do my own (y).
Oil and filters are on offer with Euro Carparts - 30% off at the moment. Oil is just over £26 for 5 litres and filter about £6 - Quote SERVICE30 at checkout. I buy 2 x 5 litres of oil which does 3 changes (9.6 litres) and I get filters from eBay (about £4.50). Be careful as there are two types! Mine is the 100mm tall 67mm diameter with a spigot - EuroCarparts No 50172 1358. Just ask if you need to know what tools etc. or the process. Cheers

Thanks for the info Quboffin (y)

I am a little confused though. I've never heard of a car using a single sump and oil grade for engine and gearbox before. Can you please confirm, are you saying that the gearbox does not use its own oil and oil grade which is changed separately to the engine?

Normally when the box is removed for a clutch change or the likes, this is its own self contained unit usually integrating the differential in the same casing, but no oil is shared between this and the engine.

My 1.3M-Jet is a Sep 2007 registered car, 5 doors utilising the 5 speed gearbox.

No issues with the process, had my hands oily plenty of times before ;) will need to check which oil filter I need though, as my schedule is tight including a major service plus MOT plus Road Tax on the same day!

Cheers, Hum

DOH! Sorry Hum, silly me  , I was getting confused with my old Austin Mini Cooper!!

According to my handbook, the gearbox on the 1.3 MJTD takes 1.98 litres of synthetic SAE 75W-85 (Fiat use Tutela Car Technyx - API GL 4 PLUS).

Hehe, that's ok. At least now my research and the above are now in line with each other. Confusion over, phew. :D

I even called my mechanic to check, he said he only remembers MINI's sharing engine oil for gearbox lubrication purposes (y)

lucismani,

im clear on your oil decision...it is a spec, not a brand, choice.

so my question is, what about the 2 different oil filter types...is there any way to tell which size you have BEFORE your first oil change? like, one is longer than the other, or wider? can i measure the plastic cap on the engine to determine? i have the 2012 1.3 MJ.

thanks.

There are two types of filter for my 2011 1.3mj , one made by Purflux and one made by UFI. I removed the pressed steel shield (three allen headed bolts) that covers the filter housing and carefully examined it. The housing had ufi moulded into it so I went for that one. I have now noticed however that there is another filter for EURO5 vehicles. Put your reg. in micksgarage.com and it shows you the different types. If you are not sure it may be wise to get two or three from your local factor if they will agree to take them back.
