Technical OCS Airbag Sensor Problems

Right, that's a lot better. The link you gave www.airbag24.de
only says "Deactivation of co driver and side air bags".
Do you have a link for the actual device you are referring too?

Does it set it permanently for full rapid deployment or staged deployment?
Will the passenger airbag disablement switch still work?

They need to tell you exactly what this modification is going to do and what it is simulating. The airbag ECU is very particular and unless it receives the GO signal from many parameters it won't fire any airbag

The chld seat has probably deformed the OCS, see if you can straighten it out. The warning will only extinguish after 3 clear starts though.

We can always send stuff out to either of you if it's a lot cheaper here. EU and all that - it ought to be the same price everywhere

well, what they told me was that the device is simulating an adult sitting on the seat. you can still disable the passenger side airbag with the lock in the dash.

If it's going to be fixed on any setting then adult setting will probably be the best compromise

Glad you can turn off the airbag with the side switch, your earlier description of "albeit the passenger side airbag is now always activated"
didn't make sense and of course would be lethal if installing a child rear facing seat there

Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

Hi. I have just a bought a 2003 Fiat Stilo 1.2 Active A/C. There is an airbag warning light up on the screen. I have printed the very helpful guide by member Deckchair5 on Airbag Failure Warnings and have been studying this.

I have looked under the passenger seat and come across the grey wire (Occupant Classification Sensor) and have discovered this is not connected to anything and I am wondering if it is supposed to be. If so, what is it supposed to be connected to and does anybody have a diagram.

I am wondering if it is supposed to be connected to something it might explain why I have a warning light up on the dash.

I hope someone can help me with this one.

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

This seems to be getting quite common :bang:

It appears that some people think that taking out the OCS will cure the warning light. As you can see, this does not work.

It sounds like you just need to get a new sensor and follow Deck's guide on how to fit it. I think about £100 should cover it. Quite easy to fit too.

It may seem like alot of money, but it is a clever pice of kit, and it's well worth spending the cash to potentially save the life of a loved one I'm sure you'll agree.

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

I was £80-90 for my OCS. It comes fitted to the seat cushion so your passenger is getting a comfier ride. Estimate 2hrs for fitting. It's easy when you follow Deck's guide. Worst part is refitting springs.

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

There may be something there to plug into, but it is not currently plugged into anything. I would like to know what it is meant to be plugged into and does anyone have a diagram please.

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

I have a slight feeling there may have been some slight confusion over this wire. I remember though when i picked up the car there was an ornage light on with a cross through it (or something similar) which when i turned the key on the airbag deactivation control this when out, so if this is to do with the OCS Sensor i think things are all ok.

I think there is just a general wiring loose/corroded fault and I will try and carry out the cleaning method on the connectors tomorrow (as suggested by Deckchair5) and see how this goes.

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

The passenger airbag deactivation key switch turns the airbag off and the warning light appears on the dashboard. This isn't anything really to do with the OCS which finds out what's sitting in the passenger seat and how it's sat in order to deploy the passenger airbags in a staged way to minimimise possible harm to the passenger.

Look in the Stilo guides for OCS replacement and you'll see the OCS connector. There should be a a connector at the middle front lower part of the seat which will lead to the OCS itself. Can't imagine why people take these things out

Wiring diagrams aren't around for mere mortals because you are just that-mortal -so teyir availability is for qualified techs only because there are more than a few explosive devices besides airbags in the system. The driver's airbag will easily break your thumbs on the steering wheel and even people whose lives have been saved by airbags have bits in their eyes and mild skin burns. But if you're foolishly working on an air bag without disarming it, then it can inflate and break your neck long before you see it coming. People think that airbags are like soft fluffy pillows but they come out with the force of a sledgehammer and have to be inflated and already deflating before the occupant reaches it. That's why the airbag won't deploy if the seat belt for that person isn't fastened

So changing an OCS or just spray cleaning connectors is about as far as it goes for DIY advice. The rest has to be at your own risk

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

i had the exact same problem with my car, same car too, 2003 Stilo active 1.2 (weird??)"airbag failure" on the screen and the airbag light came on, so had a look in the guides and whilst cleaning the connectors i noticed that my OCS was missing too, i tried switching the passenger airbag off but this still didnt make a difference, so i got a passenger seat off a stilo from a salvage yard and took the OCS from it and connected it, but no change, stil the airbag failure and all so this may not solve your problem

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

Your best bet Johnny is take it to a Fiat garage as they can read the Airbag ECU fault codes and narrow down the fault.

The scrappies OCS might also have been duff, they often are as they wear out with time

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

yea im going up this weekend, there are no fiat dealerships close to me so its quite a drive to one, but i want them to find out wats going on, little things like tht "beep beep beep" would do my head in. hoping they can trace the problem, and depending on cost fix it too, lol. wish me luck

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

We have discovered that there is not a problem with the OCS Sensor-When the airbag is de-activated the light is on and when it is re-activated the light goes off. Cleaning the connectors solved our problem, so thank you again to the post by Deckchair5.

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

That sounds normal then. Good stuff:)
Avoid putting sharp, heavy objects on the ocs whenever you can, put them in the boot. It's a sensitive and expensive bit of kit

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

js a random question as someone suggested this to me, dont know if its possible, i have a can bus reader, if i plug tht into the airbag ecu will it generate a code bt i will have to find out wat tht code means by searching the internet of contacting fiat?

Re: Airbag Failure-Occupant Classification Sensor

Airbag diagnostics are available at pin 3 on the eobd connector. If you have something connected to pin 3 on your diagnostics gear connector then you may be able to read off any fault codes there

This thing is great!!!
Just bought ang fitted simulator and works fine. You also get manual and description how to install it, so no worries. No more expencive replacements of OCS. :slayer:
