Hello,

So this noise appeared when I started the car up about this time last year, but then come January it stopped and has never happend again until last week when the weather was starting to get cold again.

People on another site are saying it sounds like the starter motor, or an alternator bearing/clutch.

Anyone know, and how can I test what it is, as nothing is coming up as an EML or on Fiat MES.

Thanks

I've had that noise for two years.

Worse when cold.

Two mechanics have said it's a dirty starter motor....not worth replacing.

So far so good.

It's a dry starter motor gear shaft. To fix it you need to remove the starter motor and oil or light grease the shaft. Or just put up with the noise in cold weather.

Or instead of cleaning it. Maybe just get a new one. I read they only last about 40,000 miles.

Also had a bit of white smoke come from bonnet area of car this morning when engine had been running...

Probably too late now

Starter motor Bendix sticking

Fixable

Its getting tiring keep repeating this but it works. I say it many times and based on significant experience. We have now had 5 of these engines run for 250, 000 miles and they dont now go to Fiat as they never do the things that are required to make them run well. No parts are required to make the car go as it should. Frankly the more you rev these engines (withing reason) the better they get. Plodding about just kills performance and if the cars been owned by an old lady it will be dreadful all 3 of ours had been old folks cars and were a flat as a pancake even Mrs Panda Nut who is 68 and nver does more that 40mph unless on the M1 can tell when they have been breathed on. Fitting a new VVT thats tight and stiff is probably the worst move you could make.

Key issues are this, de rusting and fettling front brakes and annual clean and free up of the in drum rear brake adjusters, Also refresh the clutch fluid annually and keep change the gearbox oil every 30K. Im also pretty sure fitting a catch can in the breather pipe is a worthwhile investment. The suggestions are not critical but by god they make a big difference.

This is the starter, I've had the exact same noise. I got the starter cleaned out and it fixed it for a few months but the noise eventually came back. Bought a new Febi starter for 80 quid on ebay and it's been great since.
