Hi everyone, sorry—me again!

So I got the clutch replaced on Tuesday and it feels so much better! Thanks for your help on that one.

Another question please!

I’m a bit of a worrier and tend to drive myself
Insane if I hear noises etc so please forgive me!

I’ve recently changed the timing belt, water pump and Auxillary belt with a Gates kit. Two weeks ago, By the book following this video.

Long story short, is the belt too tight? I have attached a video.

I meticulously checked the timing marks, plenty of times to be sure when doing the job. I used the lollipop tool and tip ex marks. The new gates tensioner kept moving when I was torquing it down so I used the old tensioner which had only done 20,000 miles, replaced in 2020. That torqued down as expected. I turned it over by had 5 times to be sure of the timing marks and checked the tension again after and it was fine.

It runs and drives fine but it’s making this noise. I’m not sure if it made it before or not. I’ve only owned the car for two months. I’ve ruled out the Auxillary belt.

Thanks for your help.

Take aux belt off run engine see if noise gone.
Could be alternator bearings

Did you replace water pump ?
Turn tensioner anti clockwise to tension?align the tension pointers?

Are the guards fitted properly and not catching the belt or pulley's, if they are ok I'd check the tension on the belt it could be a bit to tight.
I’m sure they are yeah, I don’t think I’ll be satisfied until I check it visually, I’ll do that tomorrow. Now the old tensioner that I had to use is of a different brand, I guess that could affect the correct tension of the gates belt possibly?

I did yeah, I did have to re use the old tensioner which is a different brand, this could possibly not tension the Gates belt correctly?

and I did make sure that the pointers aligned plenty of times both before and after turning it over by hand.

Also, although I locked off the crank with the correct tool, I didn’t use the cam tool as I didn’t have a new gasket to use.
This case, there’s no way to tell if the cam was 180 degrees out, could this have affected setting the tension?

Brand of tensioner shouldn't matter.
Tension is set without locks fitted so make no difference.
Did old tensioner spin silently and smoothly?

Ah did you get the correct belt?
How wide is it in mm?
You forgot to tell us it's a 1.1 not the 1.2 in video

I’ve just realised something actually, you say about turning the tensioner anti clockwise, I used the tensioner tool and levered it downwards. I’m starting to think I’ve tensioner it the wrong way if that’s possible?!

Sorry guys yeah I used the video as a reference, my cars actually a Fiat Panda 1.1 2010

It’s the correct belt yeah, 22mm. I double checked from the product code of the Continental belt that I took off and they are both 125 tooth, 22mm.

It is vital to turn correct way to tension

That is assuming previous belt correct.
What engine number do you have ? Look on v5c for that

I have fitted a couple of Gates PowerGrip timing belts on Pandas and they both made a whirring noise.
They aren't what I usually fit, but I'm told others that have fitted that brand have been concerned by the noise.
Both are working fine though and the most recent was last May, so it might just be a feature of the belts.

That’s very interesting, I really hope that’s the case! Is the noise the same in your examples as to my video?
