I get a squealing noise that lasts for 1-2 seconds after start up. I heard it for a few days during the summer but it went away, today it has returned so probably a good idea to sort it out.

Video of said noise:

Anyone recognise the culprit? Alternator belt, starter motor, something else?

Cheers.

It's definitely got to do with the starter spinning down, either a dry bush on the armature shaft or, and I think more likely, the little one way freewheel in the pinion gear? In days gone by I'd have stripped this down and sorted whatever needed sorted. Now a days you'll probably find it hard to get the bits due to no-one doing this sort of thing anymore and it actually costing more for a garage to do it than fit a service exchange unit. Conclusion? starter motor needs to be replaced.

Starter motor

Bendix not retractinting quick enough

Fixable

Dust from the clutch mixed with the grease making a thick paste

Clean regrease good as new

I believe @irc has done a few

There's no hurry in fixing it, it's likely to last like that for some time
Hmm. Could be. I'd take it out and be having a good look before making the decision as to whether it's repairable or going to need a new one. Hate spending money without good cause.

Pretty sure that's the cause. My 100hp and quite a few 1.2s made exactly that noise, and a cleanup and LIGHT re-grease sorted them.
The best grease type I've found for these so far is the LiquiMoly LM47 one in the picture, but I'm sure others will have their own recommendations.
There is another cause I've seen, which is that part of the engagement fork has broken off, and this temporarily jams the bendix out. If there is a loose rattle when shaking the starter then it is worth dismantling to inspect.
Or you could just replace, but repair is my preferred option.

Yes you can inspect before replace

Irc has already answered

But when you spin the Bendix round with a screwdriver

Before and after cleaning, you be surprised the difference and wounded how it ever worked at all

Mine had done 200K and the grease was more like fudge
