So tonight I sold Sylvia (via paypal) for the grand total of $1 (US) to a Mr Mike Bouse of Coldwater, Michigan. I have orginised delivery to New York but unfortunalty he can't collect the car him self so he'll have to insure the car and then put me on his insurance so I can legally drive it to Michigan to deliver it.

May take a number of weeks as I have to pick a few other things up on the way (Like Alan for a start:D ) and then I fly back leaving Sylvia with him under the 1 year tourest visa that she was imported under.

Looks like I was pretty close with my prediction then  . Must buy a lottery ticket tomorrow :D

Didn't know you needed a tourist visa for a vehicle.. pet passports for your car. Jim, can you keep a straight face (no pun intended) when you meet Sylvia at the docks and the immigration officer grills her about her reasons for wanting to enter the United States...

Cheers,

Plug

That brick wall that I keep running into is about to strike again.

I've not spoke to Mike about this yet as I thought I'd let Sylvia's fans hear first...

From the US Dept of Transport...

As a general rule, all motor vehicles imported into the United States that are less than 25 years old must comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS), or be brought into compliance with those standards by a Registered Importer. Vehicles temporarily imported in the following circumstances are exempt from this requirement and do not have to be modified to conform to the FMVSS. A DOT HS-7 Declaration form (available at ports of entry or at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import) must be completed for each vehicle imported.

NONRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

A vehicle registered in a country other than the United States may be imported for personal use by a non-resident of the United States for a period not to exceed one year. The vehicle cannot be sold while in the United States and must be exported within one year from the date of entry. This period cannot be extended under any circumstances. The importer’s passport number and the name of the country that issued the passport must be supplied on the HS-7 Declaration form. Use Box 5 on the HS-7 Declaration form.

Ok in English

A - I sell the car to Mike / Result? He can't import it cause he's a US citizen and Sylvia is the automotive equivalent of 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'

B - I keep the UK V5c in my name and he can't insure it cause it's not his car.

It's catch 22!!!!

Honest to god, how ****ing difficult can one nation be!!!!

The Americans are just going to work and the emails are coming in now....

Oh dear god.

Mike,

I believe that I can get insurance for you through the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility. The premium with the highest liability limit of $250,000 is $830 every six months. The downpayment would be $332. If you want physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision), the premium would be $1,292.

Things to consider:

1. I can not absolutely guarantee this will go through without problem. I did my best to ask questions, but it is a unique situation that no one has done before.

2. You can not apply for insurance without a copy of the title showing that it has been signed over to you. I recommend doing this as soon as possible so that a policy can be in hand before July 4.

3. You would need to have the vehicle titled in Michigan as soon as possible. I am not sure what their requirements are for this situation.

4. Will the port authority accept a Michigan certificate of No-fault insurance to release the vehicle?

5. I can NOT write physical damage coverage without FIRST inspecting the vehicle in person. They would accept the signature of a licensed New York agent if you can arrange this. I can provide the required form. This physical damage quote is based on the vehicle being worth up to $15,000. I would need to know what the current value of the vehicle is. If it is just $200, you would not want physical damage coverage.

6. Michigan law requires that the vehicle be used, or is intended to be used, in Michigan for 30 days. Coverage could be voided if it were determined that this was never intended.

7. The quote includes bodily injury liability limits of $250,000 per person and $500,000 each accident. Property damage of $100,000 and uninsured motorist coverage of $20,000.

Good Luck-the ball is back to you,

Scott

That's a mail between Mike and his insurance agent scott...

Steve, I may take you up on that offer of the nice doctor to tell all my problems too:eek:

Jim

Mike has just confirmed he can't insure the car...

The club members have just recived this.

Jim and the Panda need YOUR help!

He and I have stretched our imagination to the breaking point over the past several weeks, and have fallen short on being able to obtain liability insurance for him and his auto while in the States. As of this point, he has all but given up on importing the car to the US because of this.

I’ve done all I could with my limited resources, and was unable – even with the help of an insurance friend – to get him the coverage he needs.

Please give Jim a shout at the above email address. He needs FLU’s help, or we won’t see the Panda in Detroit.

Anyway...

Think Stu has went to bed now:D

(and I'm just finishing my bottle after a curry)

So tonight I sold Sylvia (via paypal) for the grand total of $1 (US) to a Mr Mike Bouse of Coldwater, Michigan. God, the lenghts you have to go, to get into the United States!

But this time I'll have to stay away from Fiat dealers!!!

(and not park Sylvia in gear:eek: )

Just not sure when I get Sylvia back thou as Mike is rather keen on running round in a multi coloured British regiestered RHD Fiat and take it to a few more 'import' shows!

That car has a more interesting life than I do!:p

Jim

You Gave in to easilly there, we had them all on the edges of their seats. Do you all think I never mind Jim would let Sylvia be owned by anyone else.
Jim I still think a call to the US consolute might be a very good idea with a full explanation of what we were hoping to do. If you want to take a run down to the US Embassy in Belfast to see if they can advise us I'll go with you. You never know it may help.

Don't argue with a policeman stu! Anyway, at least Mike gave me my dollar back for Sylvia... Alan is chasing a few more leeds this morning and aig is one of them. just trying to find a broker is the problem...
Jim

On a different note I'd parked Sylvia up at work the other day in the corner of the public car park and there was a vintage day in town (Steam tractors and really old cars) and as I went for a wander over I caught this little old couple reading Sylvia but as I got the phone out they wandered off... Dread to think what 'George & Mildred' thought of it all!:p
Had loads of people come into the shop and ask about the car. The conversation usually ended in 'Your crazy, Mate':D

Anyway, 2 weeks today we'll be in London at Whitewebbs Museam in Enfield and the following day the car is taken to Seaforth in Liverpool and dropped off at the docks for loading onto the Atlantic Compass..

Never thought I'd actually make it this far.

Like I started this thread last year and I really thought that it wasn't going to happen. It was just too much money and risk involved to take it seriously no matter how much I'd dreamed of taking my little Panda all the way across the USA. There's been so many ups and downs along the way and sitting here just before I go out and give Sylvia her last service I'm a bit amazed at the amount of physical help that I've had from Stu and Steve and the huge amount of really practical advice and moral support from everyone on here during the down times when it all looked bad.
I genuinely mean this. It would not of happened without the FiatForum and I owe everyone here big, big time.

Forget Honda 'And the power of dreams'. Go buy a panda, join the FiatForum and live them:slayer:
