Pugs aren't all bad. Sure, they rust so badly you can get into the car without opening the door after a few miles but when they're working they're a blast. Personally a series 1 or perhaps series 2 106 Rallye would be my choice over a GTi - less to go wrong, lighter and as I said, great fun. As with many cars of that age, just make sure the bodywork's not ventilated in the wrong places, the rear beam's in good nick and all the usual things have been well cared for.

Something fast but with low insurance though is a difficult one. As an offshoot to the above paragraph, the recommendations of a Cinq are well founded. Group 3 (iirc) for the standard Sporting, pop in a 1.4 or similar and you've got something that'll shame most modern "hot" hatches. Plus you'll still get the diesel type economy you're so used to. Obviously though some of the luxury of the 156 may well be slightly lacking

Crazily though, I've noticed many diesel cars are so much cheaper to insure than their petrol equivalents. From memory, the M-Jet 150 Stilo's something like group 7, but the Abarth which is 20hp more powerful but not as torque friendly is up at group 14. They basically look the same and can be specced to pretty much the same standard but due to the diesel factor, insurance view them as a safer bet even though in many conditions the diesel will be the quicker car. Personally speaking I prefer the revvy nature of a petrol of a diesel but it could be the best option if insurance is proving such an issue.

On the other hand of course, could it be the insurers you're getting quotes from that's the problem? Could be worth shopping around some more.

Was looking for something a bit newer than a cing tbh.

I have my eye on the civic type-s/5 door sport version 2.2 CDTI at the minute only insurance group 10 (quoted 998 fully comp, which is the same as I will be paying this year anyway) it is 140bhp standard with a remap it reaches 194bhp standard 0-60 is 8.3 seconds so with a remap it would be seriously fast :D

@richard33dees - I have thought of that but I don't really like the looks of the 147 and the Mito is a bit to expensive for what it is :( I know exactly what she means though! I work about 2 minutes drive from my house but after a night shift at like 5/6am I some times drive around the back roads and get home about 20 minutes later haha

How much for insurance?? Blimey, don't think av every paid as much as that. I dread to think how much some of these boy racers are paying for there Focus RS, Golf R32's etc.

lol, imo the original 147's were a lot nicer and drove better than there face lifted softer replacement. The MiTo has been a grower for me, 17k for a cloverleaf model tho, I think ad get an Abarth500 for 16k. Just seen a Giulietta, oh she is beautiful!! But for us size and practicality mean it's a no go :( I had thought you could get a 147GTA in your price bracket, but there still about 11k used.

As Rob says, you could get a cinq/sei and drop a 1.4 in an shame a few big boys for fun :)

I would love a GTA . . . if the insurance wouldn't be half of the cars value every year lol

Yeah insurance has gotten stupid for young drivers!! I am 20 with 2 years NCB (lost 1 due to changing car too early)

The first insurance I ever paid was £1400 THIRD PARTY!!! for a £400 mk1 punto how do they even work these figures out? :(

Yeah I know what you are saying Ming, Thats why I love the Alfa, but the power of the civic for the insurance cost (and car cost for that matter) I don't know how to say no to it haha

Don't get bogged down by the figures factory prints out ....

I'd consider Toyota starlet GlanzV is insruance allows. I personally don't like to buy a car that there are loads on the road :D

Ming

I nearly bought one of those as my third car, bought my Sei instead tho  Does size matter? Next to another Alfa we'd have another mk1 Octavia vRS, awesome cars and very under rated. Not so much a fan of the mk2's but there are petrol and diesel options, about 200hp and fairly well priced on insurance. I think I paid less than 400quid when I was 25

OH OH

I should be picking this up tomorrow :D

I have so many plans for it already haha Need to get rid of that middle piece of plastic and replace it with black :D

well......shock horror...... something I thought was going to go smoothly in my lift came back and inserted its self between my cheeks!

The guy phoned me and said "I am sorry mate, its sold" He didnt have anyone phone up about it in 2 weeks then suddenly when I decide I want it BOOM its gone!

Back to the drawing board.

well can just as easy stick with the fiats or others as you can get the bravo same version as mine for around £7k and have it mapped to 150hp and im just under £400 fully comp with additional drivers
could always go the grande aswell but not as reliable but with the 130hp diesel engine although i dont know what the insurance is like but its nippy and cheap to run :)
nearly went for the 130 grande myself but just could look at for longer than 5 minutes :D

just checked :) the grande is a group 6 so that peanuts to insure for a potenial of 160bhp :) and already has the 9.2s 0-60mph :D

Liked that Civic when it first came out, but the shape's gotten old rather quickly. Don't like the Type R version of it at all, would rather have the JDM spec saloon with the extra HP and LSD - acronyms ahoy  If I were considering a Civic myself though it'd be an EP3 or EK9, then I'd probably veer off and get a DC2

Wonder if you could get a discounted Multi-Air Punto Evo. Have heard those engines are rather decent not only for economy but for go as well.

Agree with you Rich about the Octavia VRs as well. I remember seeing a mk1 being driven in a "spirited" manner and in a not so standard guise. Dump valve was very present and it looked rather smart. Mk2 version's meant to be good, same chassis/engine as the mk5 Golf GTi with the turbo potential for remapping. Insurance will probably push those out of the equation though.
