motorway services
this is a huge bugbear of mine, I use the M6 quite a lot at weekends, I do limit a visit to the services by just going to the garage part, as they sell almost everything that the main shop does.

Why are things so expensive? I cant believe people will pay £2.50 for a ginsters pasty for example, and £3 odd for a sandwich

Fuel, why does it cost more at a services than it does in town? lorry access to deliver it must be easier!!

So, I have had a think, TESCO should start buying up motorway services, shop prices would be the same as a typical "tesco express" which is good value for money, and fuel would be on a level with a typical town.

Food outlet within the services, this would be a Greggs, Mcdonalds or both.

What would everyone else hate at motorway services? and what would you have to make them better?

Scrap the lot of them and replace with the type you would encounter on the continent. Fuel is similar price to in town, even though there is an attendant to fill the car for you. Food is cheap and freshly prepared from quality ingerdients.

The motorway services at Dartmouth was the first place we stopped after returning from Belgium. What a s**thole.

Pulled over at Membury Services on my way home yesterday and KFC had no chicken!

WHSmiths is in most services I stop at and I agree, it's quite pricey..

On the petrol front, if you need petrol on the motorway, you're gonna flaming pay for it aren't ya? lol

Motorway services are rip off city but if you have to stop at one my favourite services is on the northbound M6, Stafford services.

Only decent one I was ever in was Norton Canes (on the M6 Toll).

However - be bloody glad you have them! You can drive from east of Athlone to the border here - 225km - and not pass a single services. There was *one* UK style Services here, on the N4 (M-grade) at Mullingar; and they recently closed and knocked the restuarant. So its back to dual Essos with hot delis that close at night in them and a pointless underpass.

You need to leave the motorway network to get fuel even. And advertising along the motorways is illegal so you've no idea where the stations bar the pump sign on town information boards; let alone if its 24 hours!

Going north we use Keele a lot, cos when you come off the slip road the petrol station bit is right there, no going round the road looking for it! The Hot Chocolate is lovely, overpriced, but lovely!! and it doesnt burn your mouth off like some others.

Going south Hilton Park is also one we use, theres a small overflow car park at the back which is always empty, with benches you can sit on under the trees if its a nice day

i've been on coach journeys to the continent with school thing, and most of the service stations are disgusting:yuck: only encountered 2 nice ones in France, the others were disgusting, dirty and smelled, overpriced bits of bread on sale etc. Worst ones i have ever encountered is in poland, an old shack thing with a toilet with a curtain also in Germany the service stations were pretty nasty:yuck:, yet the nicest i've encountered have been poland.(y)

always make sure i've got enough petrol to make a journey when i begin. only time i've used the services over here is when i had to go for a ****. and generally british ones are cleanish, not spotless but not bad as far as public toilets go. lol

Best southbound services have got to be M40 Oxford services or Norton Canes on the M6 Toll. They rip you off like crazy but at least you have somewhere nice to sit down with your overpriced tea or coffee and chicken ceasar wrap.

Try doing that in a 100HP with speed camera proofing (foreign plates) for getting from Holyhead to Edinburgh! Think I used two full tanks...

I usually end up at Charnock Richard going south or Abingdon going north. Tebay near here has a very good reputation and is certainlu quite interesting compared to the norm with fresh food, a nice coffee shop and plenty of local information :)

i try to avoid them nowadays..... although i did visit one on the way to london... and when we have our convoys for fiat events and stuff (y)

i only really get a hot chocolate there and thats bout it... and a sponge bob blanket

We went to one in France where the place was very nice, and one where it was a bit lacking. Belgium doesn't seem to have any motorway service stations opting instead for big places to stop but with no services.

Italy by far was the nicest however the one we encountered in German was very clean. Had to pay 50 cents to use the toilet but you got a voucher for 50 cents off anything bought so I guess that's fair.
