under the bonnet....
Hey guys,

Took my car in for it's MOT and for the unfortunate for me it failed on a few things, now the garage said it's roughly £50 to fix the other stuff and for the other stuff is it needs welding.

So here's the run down guys:

  1. Nearside headlamp aim too low [1.8]
  2. Offside Headlamp aim too low [1.8]
  3. (filler neck) Fuel system component insecure [7.2.1] (needs a plate weld to secure it again)
  4. Offside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded [2.4.A.3]
  5. Nearside rear Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded [5.2.6]
  6. Parking brake efficiency below requirements [3.7.A.10]
  7. Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort [3.7.A.7a]
  8. Offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort [3.7.A.7a]

It does have advisories but the ones above are the main important things to sort out, now here comes the question is it worth fixing or getting rid? And for those people who know about welding how much am I roughly looking at spending on welding. As I said before for the other things apart from welding the garage quoted £50 as an estimate price.

So opinions and advice is needed guys! :(

Thanks in advance!

We need pictures of the rust - to tell you whats what

Is the filler neck is probably just a simple clip? Becareful having welding done near fueling system

Headlights - turn the adjusters :)

Handbrakes = Strip down - clean - deglaze - readjust and rebuild, this should improve it alot :)

If shoes are thin 1mm or so - replace
Check drum diameter too - if its too large - its worn out

Get the rust and welding done first!

If someone could give me a rough rough idea how much it'll cost me I'd highly appreciate it!

Wow....I was expecting a pic of some rust behind the filler cap/where the neck should be clipped. That amount of rust in a highly conspicuous area makes me concerned about the state of everything else.

What is the state of the underseal, radiator support, and all the other thin stuff? Wheel arches at back?

All fine according to the MOT sheet, is it worth fixing or the sad thing say goodbye to it. Which at the moment would be a bad idea for me :(

Personally I think I'd get the work done, but then I know what I'm looking at (no disrespect intended) and would be looking at things which could cause future issues and be resolving them now.

It's cool I'd happily to admit that I'm clueless to all of this :p but looking on the money side of things is the problem for everyone these days with cuts all that bad stuff...I asked someone what they think and said I'm probably looking at around £150-300 is that correct? Seems steep but what I would I know lol as I said I'm new to getting a car welded, my old car failed on same thing although a lot worse in terms of 26 faults!! So on this car total 8 problems so guess not too bad eh? All I need is a rough figure to what I'm looking to surprise the bank with :bang:

the fuel cap area i would just get a metal sheet, cut out a piece and bolt it in to re-secure it, then paint it all over to stop any more rust.

the underside i cant comment on without pictures of the holes, expect £100+

You sure it'd hold on to that area though (fuel cap)? Or do you mean a complete block and hole cut through for filler neck?

Safety critical areas like seatbelt anchorage points need done properly. That means welded soundly. This is for passenger safety.

You might get away with bolted plate for filler cap, but what's the point given that you are welding the rest. I doubt it would pass on that, but I'm no expert.

Remember that you will need to paint /seal new welds, or you'll be doing it all again shortly.

You really should take a look at the rest of the underside, you might be looking at some more big bills next year. But it depends what you want from your car, just getting thoughn another year might be enough for you personally.

Could this be done on other things like the hole underbody?

only non structural things really.

Nearside rear Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded [5.2.6]
you could get around this by just taking the rear seats/belts out.

you would still need to do the otherside though as thats listed as suspension

Idearly - you need to get the interior out (inc carpet)
And start poking on the floor with a screwdriver around the affected areas to guage how bad it is...

for example
What was a harmless little 2 holes + 1 bust draining hole like this

Rot B.jpg
Rot C.jpg

Before i knew it - i pulled some factory sealant off - which shouldnt come off that easily but it did to reveal the whole side of where my other half sat had completlt rotted away

Started checking - and hell - i found more ""weak"" spots

At first it was looking easy and okay - but after half a day or poking and chieseling up sealant - the floor was a mess

Learn when to call it quits - know when its good to repair

My old percy - was everything to me - it got me to and from my first job
to visit my girlfriend while she was away (hundreads of motorway trip)
The car was loved - and cared for - but its age was just too much

Edit - Have a look when you pull the carpets up - check inside the actual sills with the inspection holes - look how much crap is in there
if its rust dust galore - there could be problems....

Also the ""big lump"" highlighted by the MOT man, is what you can see in the picture there - mine was rotten too - and at that point again the cost of welding would be stupid
