spaceframe is not needed just makes it a whole lot easier. and the potential to be a lot lighter i.e you could have a fiberglass shell

I'll argue for the toss on that.

Have you ever seen the thickness of the cento shell? Most of it is single skin 0.7mm mild steel, with triple skin in a few critical places and a small bit of double skin.

Im not exactly sure how it would react to having a lot more force than standard being put through it, but Id expect it WILL need bracing.

Well, sort of. The spaceframe idea is really a rollcage plus. A stiffer composite shell wouldn't necessarily need a rollcage, but it would if you used it in competition.

IIRC, Lotus went from a glassfibre shell/monocoque for the Elite to a sort of H section stell chassis for the Elan not for reasons of strength, but cost. (All that stuff about Elites punching their struts through the GRP was, I hear, myth.)

GTM are pretty much GRP-with-subframes and gtmdriver (onthe Club Cento site) has just completed a complete rebuild an re-fab of one. Link to the pictures over there.

I think I might have to disagree with the 'easier' bit!!!

Needed? well maybe not, depends how much of a safety margin you want. Driving about, it would hold together fine with a bike engine securely mounted in the back, and a different rear axle arrangement, but not being designed for the engine in the back (what? someone actually designs FIAT's :p ) there wouldn't be much residual strength if you had a big stack. Also the shell isn't very stiff as I'm sure anyone who's jacked thier cinq at one corner, then opened & shut a door will appreciate...

A cage/spaceframe is a better way to do things, but not absolutely necesary.

BTW, Sparco and OMP both do off the peg cages for cinq's, so my advice to anyone wanting to stick any engine in the back would be buy one of them as a starting point.
I could make up a kit or parts, Z-cars style if a few people wanted to build a bike engined cinq....any takers??? Take a look at thier kit for a saxo for an idea of waht I'm talking about.

Some progress pics:

Alfa - im pretty sure that exhaust will be illegal come SVA won't it? I know my cosuin had to polyzaust his car for the test to get it through due to the pipes being able to scauld people? also, i would've thought eh whole boxe's being expose would create a difference in heat meaning a drag on the exit gasses? Ulimately the cars not all about all-out performance, it will be fast, but its a standard engine isn't it. Hope everything turns out to be legal as it would be a shame to waste that work and how mean it looks - Nice work, look forward to reading more

The dash is absolutely mint, that is exactly what i want for my car, a metal dash! come to think of it id also want the arches, and the exhausts oh yeah and the engine. What wheels you going to use to fill out the arches? It looks like your pretty handy with a welder aswell!

I was thinking the dash looked a bit big n clumsy but if it gets forum approval it must be alright!

Jordan, the silencers will be hidden behind the bumpers and radiators, just the tips exiting either side of the (widened) bumper. Don't think SVA has any rules against that but then I haven't looking into it really...

Played with carbon a bit myself - just wet lay-ups for cosmetic stuff. Was thinking of doing the dash and a couple of door trims - if you have any offcuts big enough for that in some bling looking twill  I'd be interested in buying - have seen bits on ebay but they're either tiny and overpriced or much bigger quantities than I need.
I made the dash with the protective film left on the inside, so I can hopefully use it as a mould. Door cards would just be flat, layed up on a sheet of polycarbonate or acrylic or something. Sio nothing tricky really, but then I could of course make carbon bumpers, bonnet, wings...!

What stuff have you been making with it?

Just an example of something i made recently witha carbon lay-up, machined the mould and layed that up over it to give perfect internal finish. Inlet trumpet for a 45mm TB conversion we were doing at the time. I would suggest (as i use all my carbon when i buy stock roll) getting the 2 carbon x 1 kevlar weave. Looks great, and easily half the rigidity again of 1x1 carbon only weave. Worth it. Light as anything too obviously, but would really make the interior look great but retain practicallity. Hows the project coming along?
