Media player gone tits up

My media player has been working fine with tracks from my iPod until recently. The car can read the tracks and create a library but refuses to play anything, even though the dash display shows the track that is supposed to be playing. All voice controls and steering wheel controls work correctly. Also when I disconnect the iPod I can still select media player as a source. I didn't update the iPod, it just stopped playing through the car and works fine with headphones. Help pls.

Check the "external volume" setting in the radio's menu.

Weird happenings! Synced the iPod and tried it in the media player but no good. Tried a different iPod and that worked fine so I tried the original one again and the car again wouldn't recognise it, but now the iPod has frozen and my pc won't even recognise it.
