Technical main dealer help please...

evening all,

i am planning on contacting the main dealer this week and would appreciate any advice on how to present my case.

i have a 1.1 active eco (2010) and recently had the tyres changes. i asked the tyre fitter to report on the front brakes and he advised new discs and pads were required although there is still some 'meat on the pads' as he put it. apparently there was soom blue/black tarnishing on the drivers side disc which he suggested could be due to excessive heat.

my issue is that these are the original discs and pads and given that the pads are not shot, surely the discs should still be in a reasonable state of repair and should be replaced under warranty? there must be some other factors in play here other than wear and tear?

mileage is 30k however the vast majority is motorway, the brakes dont see very much activity per mile relative to most drivers in my opinion.

any suggestions on how i could approach this with the dealer would be welcome!

I wouldn't waste your time trying to get a dealer to do anything to do with brakes discs or pads under warranty, especially at 30K miles. They will tell you it's fair wear and tear and not covered by warranty. Just take the car to a good independent garage and have the brakes replaced. They will be able to get decent quality discs and pads for about £50 + 1 hour labour to fit.

30k is more than around the world! Sounds as if you have or had a calliper sticking. When was car last serviced?

Years ago when real men smoked Capstans Full Strength and brake linings had asbestos, drums and discs would last the life of the car.
Now real men don't smoke and there's no nasties in the brake linings, discs can wear to below their service limit before the pads have fully worn.
Ask for the discs and pads that are taken off when you get the work done, then you can see for yourself if there is any unbalanced wear.
If a caliper is sticking then that would be a warranty claim. You can jack the front wheels up in turn with the boot jack ( if the handbrake is good) and check for any drag.
If the disc has got hot enough to discolour it should have fried the pads!

I ment to say sticking pads in my post above, my error, sticking callipers are rare these days especially is well used cars.

Sticking pads (very likely) would be down to maintenance, doesn't take long (or cost much) for a brake clean (lubricate carriers with spray grease/coppergrease at service time.

if only dealers did that t my sisters has a full fiat service history at 2nd service at about 18k miles the discs and pads were dead no offer of warranty just a quote of £149
