For £270 you can buy a whole computer, with a powerful chip and all the other gubbins combined.

For a key only!!!!!!!?????? :eek::eek::eek:

Someone's got a captive market here and is exploiting it to the full.

Errr no. Show me where I can get this mystical £270 PC that's more than a paperweight?

Economies of scale. When Intel fab a chip they're fabbing millions upon millions of them each month, how many keys will Fiat be manufacturing? Let's not forget that each key is individual to the car so needs to be specially cut. Sure... £270 is a joke and you can simply go to another dealer but these things aren't cheap.

I know, but the Alfa forum is actually quite boring.

:D

Well, they've made over 500,000 cars, and each car has 2 keys, so I'd guess at, er, millions?

Congratulations for completely missing the point. As I said, Intel makes millions upon millions of processors EACH month. How many keys do Fiat make EACH MONTH? Also as I said each car needs to have the key cut especially for it....

Economies of scale and added complexity.

I think you'll find other manufacturers charge similarly for keys as well..... Go into any dealership and you're looking at ~£200 for a key to be properly cut and coded.

Because they can.

A computer with a fraction of the power of a modern PC put men on the moon.

Keys are cut by machines. Look at ordinary door keys: all different. Add a chip, a transponder and a bit of plastic, and bingo - a car key.

That'll be a ton of money please sir: because we can

Plotting a course to the Moon needs less processing power than playing Super Mario.
Also your toilet seat has very few germs on it :)

It was a while ago but I paid £80 for a replacement remote key for a Corsa.
Of course then I found the one I'd lost the very next day...

bit of a fuss about nothing here

the car comes with 2 keys, either of which can be used

if you subsequently lose the main key get it replaced (y)

as has been said the key iteslf is about £80, it is the coding that costs extra and is all down to equipment and labour charges
shop around and save

check your insurance policy it may include includes key cover, or get personal possessions cover on your home insurance

my car is 3 years old now and original key still working on original battery (y)

In the past I have paid £158 for a 02 golf key and £65 for a 05 bmw 1 series key(no bladeas plugs in the dash). I would imagine £150 is the average, was very shocked it ws only £65 for the bmw fob.
