Picked mine up off eBay. Pure luck as it was up for sale in the Punto HGT area.
Little info on sports CATs below.
A Sports Cat which will be fully integrated into a large bore down pipe, has only 100-200 cpsi depending on application. Sports cats have an open area of between 75-85%, thus reducing back pressure substantially and increasing flow rates, all very desirable for extracting more performance, especially on turbocharged engines. Emission levels are maintained at legal limits by careful selection of the volume of the metallic substrate. Lamda probe positions remain unchanged from the original equipment.
Sport Hi-flow Sports Cats are made from a special stainless steel containing aluminium (called ‘Fecralloy’). This material was developed in England in the 1970’s specifically to provide resistance to oxidation at very high temperatures.
The material is used as a very thin strip (2 thousandths of an inch) and is coiled together to make a honeycomb structure. Because the metal strip is so thin, the honeycomb has a very low flow-obstruction. To reduce the flow-obstruction even further, the honeycomb is made with 100 or 200 ‘cells’ (i.e. channels) per square inch compared with 400 or 600 per square inch for a standard catalyst.
The result is that about 85% of the total cro ss-section is open. The honeycomb is held together by using a special nickel-based brazing material which is applied in a vacuum. The finished honeycomb is then coated with Aluminium Oxide, some rare earth metals and Platinum and Rhodium. The Platinum and Rhodium are applied at a rate of 25 grams per cubic foot, which compares with between 5 and 10 grams per cubic foot for typical US aftermarket items.
Supersport do a 'cat-less' front pipe for the b, if you were the dishonest type you could fit one and then just replace your cat for the MOT. We are all far too grown up and honest to do that though, arn't we?![]()
I spent the evening over at Red Dot tonight as
Tony had to import a chip from abroad to fit the ECU and it had arrived today.
He has devised a system where the chip can be unpluged from the original Ecu where before the old one was soldered in.
It is a tricky board and can see why many do not do it.
Anyway.! The B went on the rollers again for a test run before a remap.
It showed 142bhp an increase over last time but we did push her over the 7000rpm limit.
The B has the new manifold and induction but the power graph was not as good as last week.
It showed there was to much air and not enough fuel in the mixture, running too lean, 17-18 ratio where as a lesser figure of 14 would be better
After a remap to adjust the fuel mixture the B was still starving for more fuel under load conditions.
It looks like i might not be getting enough pressure from my fuel pump and so
we tried to clamp the return fuel pipe so as to mimick the pressure of the pump and after several attempts the B would still not perform as it should.
The pump would not give the required fuel as to be able to increase the power.
The injectors are good to 173bhp so this would indicate that i may need to place a more powerfull pump or fuel boost like Doc has just purchased so as to be able to get more from the engine.
More tests and investigation into other B's would help.
Sunday 11th will help as we will be able to compare with other B's if the engines run so lean.
We are getting close and just need some more tinkering and maybe a few extra mods so as to gain the extra power.
ROLL ON SUNDAY!!![]()
