Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!
attachment.php

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(
attachment.php

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!
attachment.php

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

I am so very proud to be the owner of a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley!

:D:D:D

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
yes mate. its cheap as chips if my dad does it but he does not want to :/

I didn't think you could insure someone else's car anyway, so he might not be able to.

Get the MOT place to pick it up & return it to you - cost of a drink. They will have cover already so just talk to them nicely - I got them to pick up one of mine when I hadn't got it insured a couple of years ago - they grumbled like hell, but did it anyway and didn't want anything for doing it. It helped they were close by of course.

Worth a go - be honest with them & they probably will help. (y)

John
I reckon you are missing some letters like S, L and I

TALON plus those makes you a STALLION which is much more like it, it would do in any font.

thats exactly what I was going to say, if they are being arsey about it though and you can get them to mot it one saturday Ill come and drive it over for you Im a mechanic as you know and have a traders policy that covers any car.

thanks for the offer mr urchin. i hope it wont come to it though but it is nice to know you can help me out if the worst happens.
to be fair i was thinking of getting it put on the back of a low loader. i just wanted the brakes to have a bit of use before it went in to MOT. it has been stood for a while now and knowing my luck it will fail on them because i have not had chance to "re bed them in" or something crazy like that.
just i have heard stories of the car being trailered to the mot place and failed on brakes just because they have not been used. then a few days later after no work being done to the car what so ever, the car was driven to the mot place and it passed just because the brakes had been used.
damn wish i had a bit of land i could drive the car on.

My 750L sat for 4 years, brakes were pitted to hell, passed though luckily :)

I only done 10-15 miles before the MOT, so if you can do similar on the way (riding the brakes slightly) you should be ok (y)

i was lucky with the cinq tbh as i had the welding and breaks done at the garage the mot was being done at so i let it fail then rebuilt rear brakes, handbrake etc and then had welding done and it passed had dad drive it round forecourt for a little while than drove it home (y)

i find this a little amusing :slayer:

sorry i am not doing any videos or any updates. i have just finneshed all the jobs on my car.

any jobs i need to do now requires me to be able to drive to places (like sand blasting/acid etching)

i was looking at this "Waterless coolant" you can get for engines now. has anybody ever used it? kinda like the idea of it as it wont rust any parts of the engine.

hehe my car is no longer under cover any more, the gazebo finally blown down. thankfully there was no damage to the car. turned out the guy ropes had rotted through :/

will have to get another one if i do another project. as it just saved so much time being able to work when it was raining.

still no MOT yet. still not got the insurance funds yet. i have decided i am not going to pay monthly i will just wait till i can afford the whole lot in one go. i am hoping by this time next year the insurance cost will go down a lot with me being 25.

ill try and do a few more updates....

I'm sure its very good, as well as not rusting the system it has a boiling point of 180deg C so it doesn't pressurise the system. They don't put prices on their adverts though so it must be expensive.

Wheeler Dealers used it last night on a Triumph TR6 and said it cost £90.

it is something i have always wondered.. to use a liquid other than water, like oil or something.

water does its job, but it is corrosive.

i could do a change over from water to waterless for about £100.. 60 for the waterless coolant its self and 30 for the flush fluid. you can reuse the flush over and over again. hell if the engine was to ever die i can reuse the waterless coolant as it will last the lifetime of the engine.

i am tempted just for piece of mind.. it will be something i'll look into once i have the car insured, tested and taxed.

A lot of the classics guys swear by it; and, having had to replace blocked and rusty radiators, etc., in the past (because they haven't been maintained properly...), I'd be very tempted, too...! (y)

For £100 you can buy alot of standard antifreeze which would last a long time, so seems abit silly to me, probably a good idea in cars that have big engines in small engine bays that generate alot of heat and use alot of antifreeze, but in a Panda I don't see the point. Use standard red antifreeze, an hour at most to change it every five years, job done(y)

hmm i just like the idea of the hoses not being under heavy stress..

right, today i have been doing a few things.. cleaning up the sump guard, i have made a towing eye, and had a look at the light grills.

the towing eye was a fun little project to make, just folding over a strip of metal around a D clasp then seam welding the folded metal together and drilled 2 holes in it. it came out good i think.. just needs a bit of paint to finish it off.

the sump guard is not bad, it has a bit of a dint in it from where it has previously done its job in protecting the underside of the engine, as well as a few scratches and a bit surface rust in parts.
nothin' a hammer, wire brush and some paint cant fix

the light grills.. hmm i am not sure how to really go about fixing these. first off i need to acquire some metal i can make new mounts with (not too thick not too thin) and then i have to clean them up. lucky its not as bad as i thought and just is the mounts that have rusted. the grills themselves are OK.

now i could get them acid bathed clean.. then do the work making and welding on new fixing points or i could just manually remove the plastic coating, fix them then get them acid dipped then plastic coated.
what ever way i do them they will get repaired.

anyhoo heres a few pictures of the stuffs ive been working on today.

Evans coolant....

Ethylene Glycol
Propylene Glycol

And er... well water:

http://contrails.free.fr/temp/NPG+_MSDS.PDF

The first too are common in antifreeze anyway so it just seems like a really strong antifreeze mix to me.

Propylene Glycol is also used in fog machines, ecigs and some medical stuff. It's also very cheap, none of it seems to justify the price tag.

I don't belive there is much on this earth that conducts heat better than water either so I'd expect the car to run a bit hotter, just like it would with a neat or high antifreeze mix. :chin:

We had a discussion on another forum once about cars with ali heads. If you do a search there are quite a lot of similar discussions on the web. :)

Bolted the sump guard on today after a few days painting it.. many coats

pictures speak a thousand words so have a look and do tell me what you think..:
