First of all let me start off by saying I don't personally use Facebook,I don't like it and I think it's rather sad people posting there private life in public ,however my daughter did put me an advert on there for my business because it's apparently free to advertise.
However a couple of weeks ago a guy asked me if I could help him sell his beloved Fiat 131 and straight away I thought the Fiat forum would be able to move it on been a specialist site dedicated to Fiat cars after a week of advertising the guy had no calls and less than 100 views on the forum so my daughter who is never off Facebook suggested placing an advert on Facebook ,well I was blown away, 80 views in the first 5 minutes after placing an advert at just after 10 pm at night and less than 24 hours later over 3,000 views, the owner of the car rang me this morning to ask me what I had done,he said it all kicked off last night after 10 pm the phone constantly ringing asking about the car, am I missing something here , is Facebook really this mighty ???
I did have a look at the cars for sale section and there was some really tasty Fiats for sale at cheaper prices than you would see them on e bay for.

Facebook reaches probably someone is nearly every house in the country's
This forum has what a few thousand vists a week?

Well we have 550 people visiting the forum right now, so a bit more than that. But it's been all downhill over the last couple of years ...

I started "lurking" (think that's what you say?) around on FF about 18 months ago when I came across you during initial searches for our Panda. I particularly liked the depth of technical advice available and the generally helpful and "nice" attitude of people making contributions. Although some of you are obviously known to others and there is a bit of leg pulling going on it is very rare indeed to see a post which might cause offence or upset anyone.

I decided to join at the tail end of last year and started posting accounts of my adventures checking out and refurbishing Becky after we bought her earlier this year. There have been quite a few useful and encouraging contributions but most useful was the encouragement given over the problems (caused by my incompetent computer skills) I had trying to configure my MES interface. I also found Shop4parts through the forum and, despite having "messed about" with small Fiat's for a number of years, I'd never heard of them before.

So, you can see I value the forum greatly and I'm just a little concerned to see you saying "it's all been downhill over the last couple of years." Are you being a bit tongue in cheek with this, or do you see a threat to the existence of the forum in the future.

Kindest regards to all
Jock
PS Facebook? Something the kids do? Frightens me!

Not tongue in cheek at all, when I first started on here 10+ years ago there was a great community spirit. The wealth of knowledge was a given as the forum had already been running for over 5 years before I joined, but the fact that there were a few hundred people always chatting non-car related was what kept the forum growing. When the social aspects started drifting off to Facebook, and then when Facebook started allowing users to create specialist groups people found less reasons to come (and more accurately stay) on the forum. They'd get whatever knowledge they couldn't get from Facebook, and leave again (hence why over 500 of the 546 are guests and not members). Without community spirit, forums are dying off.

Yeah, the social side used to be great. You could post up a message in the Leisure Lounge and a whole conversation would kick off.

Same with events, even a small one could generate a lot of interest.

But then back then, there was no social networking - so this was the central place to come. It was obviously going to change.

One thing that FB can't beat us on is technical knowledge though - it would just be nice if people could also stay around to chat a bit more too!
