hi i was told that when a clutch goes it will cost a few hundred to repair
ok that fine
but what are the early symptoms and what happens finally when it 'has gone'

for exampel if it gets springy then there is a posible leak meanign change the slave cylinder>
when do you change the master cylinder??
when do you repair the whole clutch>?>?

currently my clutch is riding high, meaning the biting point is quite high, does this mean the clutch has 'gone'
is there a way to just tighten the clutch cord makign the point lower? as there is no pproblem with the clutch??? only finding the damn point...


very confused please advise..
 
Clutch.........

I think you're maybe worrying a bit much. As a general rule of thumb the bite point gets closer to the floor as the clutch wears out.

If your clutch is hydraulic (mine isn't so I'm not that up on there operation) I'd say your system is fine unless you're having to top up with hydraulic fluid frequently.

the bite point isn't adjustable. think of the clutch as being a bit like a brake pad. once its worn down to the metal, 'tightening' it, by moving the pad closer to the disk, or by braking harder, will not make it effective again. once its worn down, its worn down.

As for symptoms
1) The clutch pedal will 'feel' different
2) The clutch will slip (when moving along at a slow speed, say, 15mph, put it into third and slam on the gas. but only for a few seconds. If the revs spin up, but the car doesn't accelerate then its slipping.
3) It will get harder to select gears. It is VITAL that if it gets to this stage, you dont force it into gears, as you will just break the gearbox. Instead of paying £200 to replace the clutch, you'll be paying 700 for a clutch AND a gearbox.
