Title says it all, just went to go out in the rain and turned on wipers and nothing heater and fan also not coming on. Lights work, engine starts, radio works... its a 96 sx 1.1

if it is the ecu anyone know if i can test or check anything myself with a multimeter?
Thx in advance.

Checked all fuses, main box, above glove box and 2 places in the engine bay. Mystery still.

Done some basic earth tests and havnt found anything out of the ordinary , help please it's a mystery.

I just resolved it thank god for the sporting pinto forum, a google search took me there and someone had the same problem but with a sporting.

Anyway it turned out to be dodgy ignition barrel when the key is turned the heater and wipers weren't connecting somehow, sprayed with wd40 with battery disconnected and kept turning barrel . Seems to have fixed it but the wd40 has shorted out something in there as the rear wiper is staying on. Just have to wait for the wd to run off I guess.

Might get a new barrel anyone know how much they are and the procedure?

Thanks

Nope it's gone again I need a new barrel, gonna strip this one out and see if I can clean the connectors or turn it till it works again. Any advice on where I can get cheap barrels would be appreciated .scrappies probably won't have the key :(

Buy any Mk1 ignition lock from a breakers then fit the switch to fit to your existing lock. To get the locks off, the anti tamper (shear) bolts have to be turned with a hammer & chisel. Ideally refit with the same but you could use hex cap screws.

Thanks whitesei ,I'm a little scared of those shear bolts with a chisel? It looks hard... Any more advice on how it's done?

these two bolts normally undo with your fingers once you have hit them with a chisel to loosen them
reversal as mr haynes would sayeth

Don't like coincidences - on the Mk 2 the wipers and heater share the same earth point on the inner lhs wing . It's also an earth point for the battery. Might be worth a look ?

thanks brendan i think you lot might be right and it could be an intermittent earth fault although the only time it has worked again was after playing with the igniton it hasnt worked at all since playing for a good few hours indicating it cant be the barrels switch connections. i also used a multimeter on continuity on the switches and they all seem to be working when the key is turned although i have no diagrams to check this properly.

i have a neighbor on holiday who says he will look at it on saturday he is an area manager of quick fit and is quite knwledgable so i hope he can find the fault. ive tried looking under the battery tray but it all looks clean to me. its got to be an earth fault though surely. thanks for your posts all.

There should be two earth wires from the batt -ve. One goes to the lhs inner wing and the top of the gearbox. The other also goes to the inner lhs wing and earths things like heater , wiper , front side and headlights , horn and front fogs. At least that is the setup on the Mk2. If the setup is the same on the Mk1 and some of the above list work then the problem may not be at the earth point itself but a multiplug connector close by.

thanks ill see in the morning here is a few pics for now would it be worth taking that rusty screw with the bolts out and cleaning? the bit where it meets in the middle looks fine though just underneath it looks bad also next to the main earth there is a connector tucked down the side of the tray does this look suspect? . also how do i get to the earths in the wing?

cheers

ps ignore picture 2 i was holding the camera below the tray

My neighbour just had a look and he found the fault to be from the ignition switch to the fuse box, bummer really as its a pain to get the fuse box out he said so he rigged a wire into a fuse with another fuse inline for tempo fix. I now have wipers and a heater again :). Just need a wiring diagram he says so he can properly fix it.
