Panda (Classic) Godiva -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

Introduction

PIPPIN -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

Well, having not "driven stick" for many, many years, picking up Pippin (the Panda formerly known as Godiva...) was one heckuvanadventure...!

It was fun, though! And I got him/her up to an indicated 70 mph, at one stage; but s/he cruises rather nicely between 60 and 65 mph. (It's a good job s/he doesn't have a rev counter...!) S/he also drove really well in heavy traffic in town... (it's the Shakespeare Birthday Weekend, here; and really sunny...). :D

Here s/he is, parked outside Black Cat Motors, in Stratford-upon-Avon: waiting to be MOT'd, serviced, and given a thorough once-over. (And I make no apologies for promoting them as a garage: they deliver sterling service -- which includes taking their customers all the way to pick up their new cars...! A big thank-you to John, the owner, therefore, for whizzing me up the A46 in his swish 4.2 Audi A8, earlier...! And for commenting that "It doesn't look like a twenty-three-year-old car, does it?") (y)

Thanks to everyone for their help and support -- especially to purple haze for bringing him/her to my attention...! :worship:

Watch this space...!

PS: Not a bad way to celebrate my 1,500th post to the Forum, eh...?!

2 August 2014
How Pippin looks now -- after a light fettling from VmanC... :slayer:

Used to have a 750 in exactly that colour...and it had a parcel shelf - WITH STRINGS -
The car cost me £50 in 2005 with no Tax or test..To get it through the test it needed 2 50pence size holes welding in the N/S cill..and that was it :D
I colour polished it an:D treated it to some smooth peanut butter on the bumpers (try it) and then proceeded to commute 30 Miles each way to work for 6 months .. when the time came to move her on ( for I decided to use my 600cc Bandit for the trip..economical and soo much fun ) I sold her for £450 to a guy who promptly turned it into a bannana by attempting to do 60mph round a tight bend and ended up wrapped around a tree (n)

Oh and do I get bonus points for owning a Yugo 45 too?? (fiat engine 903cc) and that cost me £25 and £30 to get through an mot....

Got side-swiped by an artic in Betty on the way down -- the driver suddenly decided he wanted my space; don't even think he saw me, or knew he'd hit me... (I got his reg, though...) -- nothing major: but the fresh paint now has a scar, a crease, and a dent. She's been left at VmanC's for him to sort...

...and then Pippin died in a tailback at the top of the A34. Warning lights wouldn't come on with the ignition -- although the hazard lights were fine. When it did start, it would cut out almost immediately, as if there was a shortage of fuel (and the tank was filled with Shell unleaded, just after I left Vernon's).

Thought it might be the alternator: but, when the warning lights do appear, the starter turns over perfectly. Just wondering if there's a dodgy connection to the fuel pump, somewhere, that's earthing out. I shall read my Haynes and Porter; and start by cleaning the hedgehogs, and waving my multimeter around looking vaguely like I (don't) know what I'm doing....

Very tired: so brain not working straight (been on the road since 08:45 -- so 11.5 hours) -- so if anyone has any brilliant ideas, please let me know. :slayer:

Pippin is safely on the drive: so am not worrying, at the moment. Just need to get him better for MITcar....

Photos of my incident-filled-day to follow....

Oh no, sorry to hear that. (n) Have you reported it to the police as a failure to stop? You might need to for insurance purposes unless it's easily/cheaply fixable and you don't want to claim against the 3rd party.

Sounds like fuel evaporation (if you exclude the warning lights) on Pippin. The Strada was stuck in traffic for over an hour on Weds (going to a show) - it was blooming hot & the car behaved perfectly for 3/4 of an hour, before stuttering every time I inched forward - eventually it took to stalling & refusing to restart - I'm sure the fuel wasn't getting through! A combination of revving it & using the choke eventually nursed it into the show (several Jags inc an E Type, and assorted Rovers & BL tat weren't so lucky!) - going back absolutely fine, not a hint of any issues. :bang:

Hope yours is as easy to cure - in other words do nothing & wait for the fuelling to cool down. (y)

If it does happen again try a new battery. Jasper started doing that - dead (no warning lights), dead, sign of life, start (until it got worse). Dead or dying battery cells seemed to be the issue & he's never done it since - weirdly the engine turned over fine but it was definitely a battery fault!

Talked to the insurance company at great length about this: and they think that he only didn't stop because he actually didn't know I was there; and didn't know 40 tonnes had hit 800 kg... (a bit like an elephant swatting a fly...) -- and he carried on driving like a complete ******* as he sped off into the distance (after having driven that way beforehand, too -- which is why I was trying to keep my distance from him... -- but failing). They didn't think it worth reporting, therefore; and think it'll end up as a 50/50 claim: my angry word against the lorry driver's purported innocence.... (No dash cam in Betty, like there is in the Punto.) :(

It happened on the M40/A34 roundabout/junction. I was in the inside lane, going round, gingerly; and he came round in the middle lane, too quickly, and trying to pull into the inside lane, too; and his back end hit my rear quarter (just in front of the rear wheel), as I tried to brake and pull left, out of harm's way. Could have been worse, I suppose....

He'd been changing lanes both on the M40 and on the sliproad, without indicating -- at one point being bipped and flashed at by several irate car drivers. UK registration. So probably just an habitual... :tosser:

Ta.... It's just started on the drive: but spluttered to a halt straightaway (over two hours since it broked) -- so I think the lack of dashlights (apart from the hazards flashing nicely...) may be a coincidence. But who knows? It's a Panda...!

It has failed to start a couple of times before -- once in Vernon's charge -- but has always come back to life when you've tried again. Strange, though, that everything should just die all at once -- electrics and fuel....

Some nice guy in an estate stopped, and helped me push Pippin on to the verge, as well -- and all as the traffic had regained speed. What a hero...! :worship:

homeward - I'm hesitating, as I don't know if your (normally very good) sense of humour is still intact today Stephen........

I'm taking a calculated risk in pointing out that your current user tag has a certain irony about it today! :(

Had a very nice recovery man: so am still intact, idiocy-wise. Well spotted! :worship:

That was tempting fate, wasn't it...?!

PS: Just changed it, to confuse everyone...! :D

You wouldn't think so, but fate seems to have an odd sense of humour sometimes!!

I think I'd still report the accident to cover yourself. As it was clearly the lorry at fault you might find the transport company will just throw a few hundred quid at you to keep it away from the insurers if you can trace them.

Re: PIPPIN -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

No way Stephen that well rubbish news :(

Glad to hear you are ok though, that's the main thing but truly rotten luck on all accounts :(

As Gav says I think it'd be wise to inform the law, the insurance company will be much more your-sided.
