Panda (Classic) Godiva -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

Introduction

PIPPIN -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

Well, having not "driven stick" for many, many years, picking up Pippin (the Panda formerly known as Godiva...) was one heckuvanadventure...!

It was fun, though! And I got him/her up to an indicated 70 mph, at one stage; but s/he cruises rather nicely between 60 and 65 mph. (It's a good job s/he doesn't have a rev counter...!) S/he also drove really well in heavy traffic in town... (it's the Shakespeare Birthday Weekend, here; and really sunny...). :D

Here s/he is, parked outside Black Cat Motors, in Stratford-upon-Avon: waiting to be MOT'd, serviced, and given a thorough once-over. (And I make no apologies for promoting them as a garage: they deliver sterling service -- which includes taking their customers all the way to pick up their new cars...! A big thank-you to John, the owner, therefore, for whizzing me up the A46 in his swish 4.2 Audi A8, earlier...! And for commenting that "It doesn't look like a twenty-three-year-old car, does it?") (y)

Thanks to everyone for their help and support -- especially to purple haze for bringing him/her to my attention...! :worship:

Watch this space...!

PS: Not a bad way to celebrate my 1,500th post to the Forum, eh...?!

How Pippin looks now -- after a light fettling from VmanC... :slayer:

Sorry not good at names.

If you still want to sell Hal we'd be interested.

I'll contact you later.

Yes I understand. It sounds like the auto box needs to be rebuilt.

Most of our cars are auto.

I know what your saying but if it's coming out it might as well be overhauled.

I think overhauling a CVT gearbox may be a bit of a stretch; and, like Most Easterly Pandas, I'm not convinced it's needed: as it's almost certainly the magnetic powder clutch and/or brushes (and it comes with spares for these -- albeit second-hand).

I always look to the worst, everything is better from there!!!

I haven't see heard or driven the car so it's all an assumption.

I have a few to look at so won't be jumping in too quickly.

Have a good afternoon and weekend.

We've been back on Pippin this week and now tyres are on wheels and wheels are on car. Also have some colour on the body repairs........

The original paint has faded quite alot but I'm hoping to bring it up to somewhere near to the new paint, which is quite alot darker. We had to send the tailgate off to the paint suppliers so that they could get a better match but it's still not there. Had the same issue with Betty, I think these old colours are just tricky. The solution with Betty was to carry out a complete respray but because most of the work on Pippin has been done behind the rear bumper and tailgate I don't think it will be necessary to go that far, unless you say different Stephen ;).

Looking good! Thank you.... (y)

I shall ask the homewardette to raid her piggy-bank... -- if it was Pinky, I think she would actually say yes...! :D

However... :nono:

For the moment, I'm quite happy for Pippin to wear a coat of many colours... -- if he's ever parked next to Hal, he'll look perfect, in comparison.... ;)

Ooh: looking at those picture reminds me, VmanC... -- many moons ago, you mentioned getting a price for re-stuffing Pippin's saggy seats (front and back, please -- although it seems to be the back one that's throwing out what looks like sherbet...).

Can you PM/text/email/carrier pigeon/Chiltern Hills me a price, please? I'll almost certainly say "yes", of course...! :)

Yes I spoke to the trimmer about this last week, he needs to see them to be able to give me a price so I'm taking them over next week along with another job I have for him. (y)

Let me know too please Vernon.

Jasper's front seats are shedding a load of "sherbet" (good description homeward !) too which I assume is the foam or whatever might be masquerading as padding. The seats look great so I'm loathe to do anything too drastic but it is making a mess!! Maybe once the trimmer has got the hang of it, I might get the fronts re stuffed if he does a good job! (y)

Just a quick note to say that -- after Vernon's loving ministrations -- Pippin flew through his MOT, yesterday, with no advisories...! :worship:

More to report when I go and collect him -- probably in a week or so: when I no longer feel (and sound) so crummy.... :(
VmanC: I will be in touch in the next couple of days. Promise....

Yep mot passed! :slayer: Here he is in their workshop......

We did have to do some more welding first though. The plates that were welded on under the floor were covering up a rusty hole on the passenger side, where the floor meets the sill. The rusty hole was directly above one of the drain holes in the outer sill so you could see straight through to the road once the mat was lifted. We decided to weld in a patch on the inside too in order to make the area more solid. They really should have lifted the mat before welding the patches underneath as we found the sound proofing felt to be burnt along with the seam sealer and, on the drivers side, the wiring loom. How everything was still working electrically I don't know!
Anyway after our welding we renewed the seam sealer and repaired the loom. I can replace the sound proofing too Stephen if the old stuff smells burnt, how did you find it?

I've taken some pics but they are not very good.........

We've also fitted rear mud flaps........

Sprayed all the welded areas with cavity wax inside and underbody wax outside, as can be seen from the state of my ramps.......

They won't rust in a hurry either. :)

On the bodywork, as well as the tailgate opening we have now tidied up the door bottoms and treated a rust scab on the roof and o/s/f wing top. I did manage to give him a quick cut / polish and wax before he went for mot so now he looks like this.........

Inside he now has re-padded seats. The foam is stitched into the top fabric so very difficult to replace, instead the trimmer has encased it in a thin layer of extra foam which should hold in the 'dandruff', and make the seats more comfortable. They also added extra webbing to improve the seat support, and I must say these are the first Mk1 seats I would be happy to sit in for a long journey (y).

The starter motor has been playing up so that was replaced, and the battery was so flat that it wouldn't take a charge. I did try connecting the battery to the charger in parallel with another battery that I knew to be good and that seems to have worked, as after an hour I was then able to start charging the battery on it's own. I'll give it all day tomorrow and see how it is, I am hopeful but if it doesn't work I'll fit a new one.

I think that's caught up with everything so far, just a couple of small jobs left then it's all yours Stephen. Hope you're feeling better soon!

Ooh: I've just come over all emotional....

I know I've said this before: but I can't see me ever getting rid of this car -- even if I have to be chauffeured/chauffeused around in it... -- it just brings a little lump to my throat, every time I see it. (Must be the drugs....) :nutter:

Thanks, again, for your hard work (and kind thoughts). Looking good (which is more than can be said for me -- although I am starting to feel a bit more human...)! :worship:
