he had an illness.he couldb't help himself.like a drug addict who needs a fix,so he needed to drink.your comment is uncalled for.may he rest in piece.

Dont have anything against him but he should not have got that liver. As for druggies burn them at the stake! Most of them living off our taxes and then stealing our belongings to fund their habit.. Then we have to pay for them to have rehab? (n)

As far as I know George Best is the Black Night - Hes not dead yet.

Alcoholism is an addiction. Unfortunately some of us get caught up in addictions that ruiin our health (mysel included). Some find it easier than others to give up. I have tried several times and failed.

A lot of you say he didnt deserve the second chance.

Let me ask you - if you had children, parents or grandparents who were dying due to a condition caused by drink/smoking would you say just let them die rather than trying to save them?

Its a hard thing to decide who should get transplants and who shouldnt. Maybe there were more people who so called 'deserved' it more than he. However, he received the transplant and that cannot be changed.

A great talent, a great person, a master, the person who made football the glamour it has become, THE 'BEST'

Don't know much about George Best, but it is a shame when somebody as young as him is going to die regardless of the what caused the illness. I am guessing he has regrets about what his lifestyle has done to him.

If he is responsible for the glamour of football now, then I would say that is a bad thing and he is paying the price for it. The focus has gone from being a sport to being a soap opera full of overpaid stars.

A guy at work died last month from excessive drinking. I bet he made more positive impact on the world than Mr Best but he'll never get the attention. He also didn't get a new liver because he was high risk of relapse.

Forgive me if I dont shed a tear for some over paid, footballer who imo gets much more attention than he deserves. If they are going to keep up this constant attention then why dont they use it to show how drinking destroys you. Too much attention on what was a very short career.

Would have been better if he'd died in a freak accident at his peak... instead of becoming a drunk waste of a liver and bad influence.(n)

There are more important thing in life than footballers. I dont see a thread dedicated to the last surviving witness of the Christmas Day truce during the first world war who died yesterday. He played in a game of football which was more poinient than every game George Best played in during his whole career put together.

:(

People are entitled to their own opinion and this is a forum for discussion.

i feel sorry for that fact that a man has died, but he was given a second chance and he threw it away. some people dont get that second chance(n)

No matter what you say about him, he is part of football folklore.

I hope that his life can teach people lessons about what addictions and alcohol abuse can do to you. If it stops one person from dying, then some good has come of his death.

please lets have respect for the dead.this is to all members.

Incidently he died age 109... and didn't turn to drink despite seeing horrors we can only imagine.

I hope some good does come from his death and youngsters dont think they can abuse drink and drugs, get patched up by the NHS and still live to 60.

A good part of it is media driven though. The death of a World War Veteran is, unfortunately, not extensively covered by the media, as they aren't in the public eye as such. The likes of Best have been in the public eye since the '60s. A lot of people instantly know who George Best is, and his career, primarily because of the media focus on football.

Exactly. He risked his life and fought amongst his countrymen for the freedom of Europe. When it was all over he just returned to everyday life.

Footballers kick a ball around a field for 90 minutes for a few years and suddenly they are national heroes.

Sometimes this country really sucks. (n)

respect is earned not automatically given. I cant respect someone who drank themselves to death after being given a second chance, life is too precious.

but when its all said and done, he has payed the ultimate price for his mistakes and at the end of the day he was only human and we aint perfect!
like hellcat said before, if he stops anyone else from following in his footsteps then maybe it was worth it.

Poster size photo of Best in the last days to be pinned up in every school changing room throught the land. Underneath his imortal line "I spent my money on fast cars, drink and women..." That should have some effect.

The guy himself asked for a picture to go in the paper ffs do you not think he realised what a stupid waste of a great life he ended up as?

Anyway can't be arsed to argue if people wanna put down a dead man even more then go for it (n) :(
