Hi, I have a 2005 plate Panda 4x4. I'm having problems with 1st and 3rd gear. 1st gear pops out but will engage if I hold the gear stick in position .
3rd gear is the real problem and crunches when I try and engage. I can live without 1st but not 3rd.
I've taken a look and I can't see a problem with the gear cables and I can engage all gears when the engine is turned off.
I'm starting to think its a problem with the synchro mechanism. My local scrap dealer has a replacement gear box for £150, so I think I should buy it and do any work on it before I install it.
Any ideas or thoughts are most welcome. Thanks.

Third gear crunch is likely to be a gear box synchro

A clutch fault should be worse in reverse

Popping out of first might be a separate fault

Is the gearbox for the 4x4 the ratios are different and the bell housing castings are different

The drive and the idler unit are in a unique differential half casing matted to a standard gearbox casing.

Thanks for your reply Koaler. Your advise is appreciated.
My local scrap dealer said it's the same gear box so I'll go and pick it up tomorrow.
I bought the car 5 years ago and changed the gear box oil 2 years ago, it was rotten and makes me think it's the first time the gear oil had been changed.
My gear box does rattle a bit in some gears and at certain speeds, so it's on it's way out I guess. More noticeable when I can't engage 3rd gear and have to just use 2nd and 4th.

Thanks again Koaler for your help.

Mike.

Thanks for the images Koalar
Just thinking. My Panda 4x4 is the Climbing model. Not sure which model the new gear box is? I'm going to pick it up tomorrow lunchtime.
Will the gear box from the scrap yard need to be a Climbing model too? I'm led to believe that the Climbing model has different gear ratio's.
Thanks again for your help.
Mike.

I believe they are the same

But there are quite a few gearboxesl as they changed over time

Different exhaust mounting

post 2010 are different

LHD and RHD are different

Whether it makes any difference I don't know
