Looking for some advice on an issue with my Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 petrol (Start/Stop model).
Background:
My gear cable snapped, so I had it replaced. During the repair, the gear position sensor was damaged. The car drove fine for a short period (around 25 miles), but then the EML came on with fault code P181D and the Start/Stop stopped working.
It’s now been confirmed that the gear position sensor is faulty, and I’ve identified the correct replacement part:
My options as I see them
I’m trying to decide the best route forward:
1. Scrap yard / used part
2. Buy a replacement part (OEM or aftermarket)
3. Remap / code out the system

It’s now been confirmed that the gear position sensor is faulty, and I’ve identified the correct replacement part:
- OEM: 55256125 / 55266125
- Aftermarket: S4P24798 (Genuine FCA unit available around £140–£170)
My options as I see them
I’m trying to decide the best route forward:
1. Scrap yard / used part
- Cheapest option
- Risk of getting another worn or unreliable sensor
- Not guaranteed to find one
2. Buy a replacement part (OEM or aftermarket)
- Most reliable fix
- Around £140–£170 new
- Should permanently resolve P181D and Start/Stop issue
3. Remap / code out the system
- Would potentially remove Start/Stop / related sensor checks
- Not sure how viable this is or if it would cause other issues / MOT problems
- Model
- Evo Active Punto
