Garmin / City Navigator updates

used a keygen in the mapping software and unlocked that, but didnt put code in anywhere else, didnt know i had to, lol

Ok, so you managed to unlock it in mapsource - and then you selected the maps you needed [I just choose the UK and Eire ones, about 15 sectors or so] and transferred them over to the unit/card - so why didn't it work? What error are you getting?

jeez u replied quick! if I remember rightly it said map locked when I put the card in the gps

Ok, so do this - get the key you used [this can be found within mapsource] - paste this into notepad, and save the file as "GMAPSUPP.UNL" - transfer this file into same garmin folder as the map.

wow easy as that huh BUGGA! I deleted mapsource months ago, will have to get it again, lol
Thanks for the advice :)

Did you use City Navigator 10 NT to update or the special update version?

Back-in-the-day I upgraded V7 to V9 and broke post-code support, had to use V9 update version to update the version stored internally on my Nuvi and keep post-code support working. V9 (non upgrade) on an SD card worked but then I had both versions listed in Map Info and was confused as to which it was actually using (both ticked). I think a workaround may have been to manually copy the post-code files back into the directory, but this was years ago and my memory is a bit hazy.

I still use an original Nuvi 300, it's still going strong. I thought about upgrading the unit but it hardly seems worth it, may as well just update the maps.

Ace :)

A good thing to do with a Nuvi in a 100HP: I made an AUX IN lead that connects to the back of the head unit and got a 8GB SD card for £18 from play.com. I use the Nuvi as an MP3 player, the sound automatically mutes temporarily whilst the Nuvi reads out directions. It also integrates properly with the 100HP's built in Bluetooth, the HU muting any source (CD, AUX, Tuner, etc.) whilst you're on the phone. It's spot on! (y)

stu, from your posts im guessing you were simply upgrading the current maps on your unit?

rite the thing is i have the genuine v10 update disk but this will only work with 2 devices, mine and the other serial i used

but ive a few customers wanting me 2 upgrade their maps as well i dont plan on charging anything as oposed to garmins 70 quid fee

the question i have is, did you delete the actual maps on the unit then send the new v10 maps and then create a gmappsup.unl file with the unlock code generated from the unit in there as well?

I actually kept my original maps on the unit, and then added in the new unlocked v10 maps via an SD card slot on the side; this is also where I put the unlock code.

Funny thing is, when you go to Settings on the unit, there is a map select screen, which shows both maps accessible to the unit - select the latest, etc.

I haven't tried deleting the original maps, and moving over the v10 one from the SD card - do you want me to try it? I have it all backed up anyway, just in case.

you dont have to like, ill take a unit from work and experiment with it

i just didnt wana take the risk of making the customers unit useless

but what your saying is good news!
i will try and load the maps directly onto the unit while keeping the old maps and see if i can choose the v10 ones, if this doesnt work ill charge them for SD cards so the boss doesnt get too mad at me, lol

customers with v7 and 8 maps :yuck:

couldnt get it 2 wrk
i got it to work perfect on mine and my dads unit but when the customer came in today they error message kept appearing on the sat nav "cannot unlock maps" i had this in two nuvi 310's despite them working on my 310 and a 200, theyre both quite old running v8. i got it working by selling him my sd card and installing the maps on it using its serial
im just wondering if theres something im doing wrong? i didnt delete the old maps, the code was generated from keygen 1.3 using the unit serial and mapset id 284
ive got an old 310 for a while to see if i can figure it out if yous can help

in the garmin folder, gmapsupp.unl if i remember rightly
i copied the generated code into the notepad, saved it as all files with ANSI formatting but to no prevail, i dont understand why it wont as it took me 2 minutes to update my dads 200 last night just to see if i could do it

if youve got all your stuff backed up will you see if yours works directly on the unit, with or without the old maps, i am just telling customers to buy SD cards and ill do it but that costs and not all sd cards can be used for it, cheap ones have fake or insufficent serials. im going 2 try and get round it this week myself
