Exactly... but the good thing is... so long as dunc keeps taking photos, we get to watch it and it doesn't cost us a penny :D

I'd give you rep points just for doing that if I could, but I don't think I'm alowed.

Dunc, that is one monster project you have taken on! I don't envy you (or you wallet!), but you should end up with one really straight shell at the end of it.

Only question I have is why you spent so much on welding/ panels when you could probably find a better shell for far less? This is just an observation rather than a criticism by the way :)

Then again, with the newest Fiats at 10 years old at least, I guess all Uno's will need some kind of bodywork doing regardless. At least you will know at the end of all this that yours won't have ANY rust in it, which for an old Uno will be something of a miracle :p

Also, any idea how come the new rear arches came in different colours? Seem weird that one was white and the other was black!

Anyway, I certainly look forward to seeing the progress pictures and the end result.

He answered your question a few pages back, he want to keep the original uno turbo registration, you could never do that with a reshell unless you use a turbo shell and i doubt there are many cheap good ones around!!;)

as smokeme said, i wanted to keep the original turbo reg and ID so i decided to fix it up hehe! costing ALOT more than a reshell but i'll be happier knowing its original :)

1986uno45s, as for the differance in colours between the rear turrets, i have no idea lol, wondered the same when i picked them up and asked them why they were different and they didnt know either! both genuine fiat parts tho! :D

get the car back tomoz nite! the only problem is, the rear arch lips i have bought wont weld on because the uno metal is too thin and is just blowing through!!!!!! ahhhhhh

Ah, ok. I didn't read that far back in the threads :bang:

Then again, it is possible to keep your original turbo registration with a reshell, but it entails doing naughty things with the chassis plates (easy to do) and very naughty things with the chassis number on the turret (not so easy, and not very legal but then who will ever find out - ahem!)

Lol! That is weird, though I guess both of them are in the protective 'primer' and will have to be rubbed down to bare metal anyway for the respray. Maybe they are from different batches or something? Still, no-one will ever know once it's sprayed it's original colour (y)

Always a problem with welding thin metal. It just vaporises when you point a welding gun at it!

Do you know what kind of welding is being used? Arc welding will be way to powerful and will just vaporise the metal, and even gas welding might be too strong for Uno panels. Mig welding should be ok on a lower setting, so it might be an idea to suggest using Mig.

If the Mig is still buring through, then you could always look into bonding the panels together. Seen this done in a few classic car magazines, though have no idea what's involved. Basically it is using a special kind of glue to join the metal together and is supposed to be as strong as welding. Often used on aluminium panels where welding is difficult, but that's as far as my knowledge goes with it.

Either way, keep up the good work and hope your wallet doesn't suffer too much!

By the way, sorry if I missed the earlier threads but are you having the engine rebuilt too? Knowing you, you're probably having some naughty internals put in it with a monster turbo grafted on (y)

Post new pics up here once the shell comes back so we can all drool at a rust free Uno!

If you can get your hands on any brazing gear then that will be better on thin metal than MIG/arc welding. I've been trying to patch the wings on my Capri but the MIG blows holes in the metal :( so a mate of mine suggested brazing it as it's not subject to any mechanical loading... now I've got to beg borrow or steal a brazing set!

i prefer oxy/acetalene welding, as YOU feed the welding rod in, not a machine.

As 1986Uno45S said, you could try super glue :D ... there is a sticky in the car care section about tiger seal, that looks like it may do the job... but if ite were me I'd prefer welding/brazing. (apart from the fact that tiger seal is becomming an appealing option for me escort! which is held together already with blutac and superglue - I kid you not !)

cheers mate, bin up today, cars still not finished as theyve had a power cut all day due to a major power cable going down (n)

also really down about it at the moment as it looks a mess and im really worried its not going to look as good as i want when its finished :(

been thinking about it and i may even reshell yet! soooo fooked off with it and just really wanna give up. not got the funds either! really have run out of money now and ive not had it sprayed yet. get it back tomoz nite and im going to have to pay for what ive had done and start doin some stuff myself like grinding the welds down and using that sealent stuff between the panels. feel really really down at the mo and just starting to loose heart in it (n)

anyway, heres a couple of pics:-

Kev, the bloke doing my welding for me working hard grinding out yet MORE rust from the front inner arch!
progress096smaller.jpg

new sill on, and the new floor i place, still a few gaps that need filling with the sealer stuff but i'll do that once i grinded the welds down!
progress095smaller.jpg

the floor in the front passenger side foot well in place. as u can see (maybe as the photos are bad! sorry!!) the floor plate is just a sheet of metal plate and the original floor is ribbed so looks different from the drivers side so im not happy about this but what can i do other than buy a WHOLE new floor from fiat for £120?!?!!?!!?

anyway, need some cheering up as i'm having to get in debt for this car with the parents!!!!

Sorry to hear your troubles mate... I was tempted to do this to my 1990 XR3i. but when I stripped it down, there was sooo much rust I knew that there would be more if I looked... so I ended up putting the wheels on it and leaving it on the drive until I moved house, and then it went to the great car graveyard in... croydon.

Just think when its all done, it'll be amazing, can you not take a cast of the drivers side foot well and produce a copy of it to stick down on the passengers side... I know its a complete con, but at least it'll look similar, nobody else would probably ever notice (even though you'd know). Maybe you could have cut something out of a scrapped uno... (it may have been badly rotted as well though)

As for the money, so long as you can pay your folks back, its the best way to get into debt, at least they're not responsible to their shareholders (unless they're borrowing the money to lend you ) so they're at least interest free (although you may be on washing up duty for a considerable amount of time)

Hope you don't loose sight of the end product (Ahhhh.... NOOOO I'm speaking corporate), But really, its easy to get disheartened when you're concentrating on whats left to do, just think about the next few steps in the plan. You can always put it on hold until you've got a cash flow again (see I can't help it...)

Having an UT can be a right pain in the arse and hurts the bank balance quite badly at times i gotta admit but its all worth it when you kick some £40,000 bmws arse on the motorway. Always brings a smile to my face, no other car i have driven has as much charm and character as my uno turbo. I love her to bits, sad as it may sound but its true. All i can say is Dunc dont give up mate, get that UT finished otherwise i'm gona come and kick ur arse mate hehe

I've just fully rebuilt my engine, new piston rings, ported and polished fully reconditioned head, competition head gasket and head bolts plus 5th injector :D I'm still running it in at the mo and she drives perfectly but i've still got a problem with smoke when the fan cuts in, must be worn turbo seals again even though i changed the turbo about 4 months ago. You can imagine how pissed off i am but i'm not gona give up, just gona run the engine in then get my turbo reconditioned. Hopefully i'll make it in time for weston wheels too. :)
