General  Fuel Consumption?

General  Fuel Consumption?

My wife has a multijet sporting and on dual carriageway we have to drive at 60mph to get close to 48mpg.
Surely this isnt right?
Car was serviced back in June with new diesel filter cambelt etc.
Is there anything else like a dodgy maf sensor that might affect the mpg or is this usual for a diesel sporting?

Cheers,

Marc

A dodgy maf would cause poor fuel consumption but I wouldn't class 48mpg as poor. The multijet isnt the best diesel engine out there really for real fuel economy.

Mine averages around 43 on very short runs and on a good distance run such as 50 miles it will average 50mpg. Mine has been remapped though so before the map it wasn't as good on fuel either. On a long motorway cruise I can see it average high 50's but that's trying hard The trip computer average will say around 63ish but when you work it out its never actually that. I usually get bored and my heavy foot ends up taking over so my usual average overall is between 43 and 45mpg.

Its average consumption im looking at.
The other half does 20 mile dual carriageway commute each way.
Just doesnt seem as good as i would have thought.
Maybe ill get a new maf sensor and see if that improves it.
I assume i get one from Fiat?

I trialled mpg when first getting my GP (1.2/8v) & found a `50:50’ spot. Effectively keeping to a 50 to 55 mph envelope the car would return 50 to 55 mpg.

Haha yes mate sorry. Im there nearly every day :) my dad lives in lodge moor so there on most weekends too.

I think my fuel consumption is okay, got nearly 350 mile on last 'tank'

I may get told off for posting links (not sure) but look at this ;) http://www.green-car-guide.com/313-mpg-volkswagen-xl1.html. They claim 313 mpg

Can change your fuel consumption a lot with just reading the road more, ie coming up to a junction why have your foot on accelerator? Also really slow acceleration helps, it does not take much petrol to keep a car at 30mph, to get it from 0-30 repeatedly through a town is where you lose mpg. Constant 32-34mph on a flatish road in my Abarth instant MPG shows anywhere between 45-62mpg

Exactly, I always let the car slow itself from 60/70 when approaching roundabouts without breaking, using fuel shuit off and the MPG goes through the roof! :)

i know mate I learnt it on a ROSPA (royal association for the prevention of accidents) course (y) it does **** some people off though lol. Traffic lights are miles away and youre off the gas and they dont realise until it turns green and you havent stopped.

That's also the other fun part of doing it

That does seem a bit low, I have a 1.9 MJet Sporting and if I'm doing 60 and cruising a long I will get around 55mpg out of it.
