General  Fuel Consumption?

General  Fuel Consumption?

reset the trip when you next fill. after your usual week remember the litres put back in to fill(make sure the same as last time e.g. 2 clicks then stop) then google a mpg checker you dont need to fill to brim to check you could check after 10 litres or 40 litres the more you do the better average you will get.

You can't check MPG with brimming the tank. Putting only 10L in does not enable you to check MPG at all.

Using 2 click method is also inaccurate as it's not filling to the same point due to so many different variables and different pumps.

OP from what you've said in previous posts assuming your filling at £1.32ppl your mpg is 29.34, but again this isn't very accurate without brim to brim and exact amount filled.

250 mile seems very low. i have the same car and i get around 350ish - 400

apart from the cold start issue, how is the car running generally ? engine ok ? any oil burning issues ?

You mention that you have "the cold start issue"? The weather hasnt exactly gone cold yet has it? Have you checked your oil and water lately?
From my experience a car not starting 1st time for no reason is usually a sign of a failed head gasket ;)

i mean, starting the car in the morning is rarely smooth and sometimes requires a second start.

i will see this week and see what I get.

If it is still stupidly low i will take it to a garage.

The car has 32K miles so shouldnt be that bad yet,

Lets just see, gonna fill up to 2 clicks as always and see what i get.

Post back soon

Sam

@grandpunto: the car runs fine, excellent in fact :(

sammclean23;2868830 ... computer says 42MPG but this must be wrong ... [/QUOTE said:
Must it?

What else does the car say? ... ALL your readouts?? range, trip, etc

Range is usually about 400. Ill see what this weeks worth gets me. I havent had trouble in the past but this is the first time iv ever tested how much I can get so maybe it has been like this all along.

Ill see what this week brings

did you reset the trip after you last filled up in which case what was your millage and how many litres did you put in. dont worry about the range because it can change quite quickly depending on your driving at the time.

if you reset the trip when you fill up then use a quarter of the tank about 10 litres and fill up with 10 litres how could i not check the mpg (i would reccomend using more than 10 litres as you would get a better reading.) i would know how many miles i have done and how much fuel i used. yes it wont be 100% accurate but it would be as close as you could get without a lab.

because the tank is not Linear. For example if the tank was 40 litres, going from the half to full Mark won't be 20 litres, it may be anything, 15 litres, 18 litres, 24 litres etc etc.

Fill your tank to full next time and let it drop until half and re fill to the top and then let me know if the car takes exactly half of the tanks capacity on book ;)

I think i understand the confusion. If i fill up reset the trip then use quarter of the tank(about 10 litres thats where it came from) then fill up To full not what i think i used then use the actual litres from the pump and the millage off the trip computer to work out the mpg(y)

Yeah I get what is meant now.

The tank is not a perfect box i.e. linear as said above.

I just thought id do the same as I did last time to double check. I am over emphasisng fuel consumption this time. Trying to drive economicaly as possible as learnt on my sneeky ROSPA course
