1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

The MAP sensor (Manifold Air Pressure) sensor Detects the amount of air in the inlet manifold (it also detects air temperature) and Adjusts the fuel mixture as required.....

If your car struggles to start (as in it fires up and the revs suddenly drop away it could be your MAP sensor is on its way out) You can't really clean it as it works on barometric pressure so will still work if its covered in oil...

so you have worked out that it is the MAP sensor causing you greif and have managed to source a replacement....

first check you have the Radio keycode (if needed) and take the negative terminal off the battery......

Open the bonnet and find your Map sensor

It (the MAP) lives on the upper drivers side at the back of the engine on the inlet manifold and is secured by one screw just below the Blue pipe between the bulkhead and the dipstick....

To replace all you need is a Torx (T25) screwdriver and perhaps a small slotted driver if the clip is stubborn.

Firstly you need to remove the wiring plug to do this pull the yellow tab upwards then pull the plug off the map sensor

now remove the fixing screw

then ease the Map sensor out of the manifold (its sealed in place by an O-ring) so just pull it and it will come out..

refit in the reverse in which you took it off

now ensure you have left the car an hour since you took the battery clamp off (this should wipe the ECU to enable the car to relearn what having a working Map sensor does for it)

now take the car for a long drive so it can relearn the engine management settings.

If the Engine management light stays on, Disconnect the battery and leave for an hour this should reset it

Re: 1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

When you go to the Shop4Parts.co.uk website the first thing is to select Fiat then the model, but there is no mention of the Grande Punto. Is it the same MAP Sensor used in the standard Punto?

Re: 1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

nice simple guide, but when you mention a symptom as poor fuel economy, what about a 1.2 8v grande thats only doing 37mpg at its best?.

also when you set off from a junction for example. it will set off and then within a second it feels like it pulls back, loses power then its fine after that...

Got a 1.2 8v aswell, it's not your map thats on the blink the loss of power in first gear! Usually its when your accelerating pretty slow in which case you should slap it into 2nd gear before you get that point, it feels uncomfortable in 1st before it pulls back. If you slap your foot down in 1st you don't get the loss of power do you? Not that theres a great deal anyway, think my bike when i was 8 got to 60 faster.

Re: 1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

Could this also cause the engine to turn but not start? Mine has al the symptoms that was described with the added benefit of not starting and cutting out some times. FIAT SA has plugged it onto the computer three times now and has not found one thing wrong. In addition I had to replace the fuel pump about a month before this happened, could this be related? I would love to hear your feedback as I would like to make FIAT pay if they caused the mess.

Re: 1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

I had the cold start problems and Check Engine warning. Thanks to this forum it lead to the MAP sensor. After using this guide to locate it I removed it and found it to be covered in mayo (oil/water mix). A quick clean with electrical cleaner and cotton buds and battery disconnected for an hour the problem has now gone and car starts first time!

Cheers

Wes

Re: 1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

I followed this guide as I had the same issue but after fitting the new map sensor everytime i stopped at a junction the car cut out. I ended up putting the old map sensor back which works ok apart from the starting issues. Any ideas?

Re: 1.2/1.4 MAP sensor replacement.

I didn't. Too busy stopping it from cutting out. Anyway I cleaned up the old one a refitted it and it ran much better. Have sold the car now so not sure if it's still ok or not.
