Hi All,

I know there are many many fuel consumption topics, however, is this normal.

My car is 1.4 8v Active Sport

I drive to work everyday which is a 20min trip, 12 mile.

I drive economically (i dont need to define this)

I drive to the gym out and about.

Anyway, real figures. From a full tank I have got 250 Miles.

This seems extremely wrong to me.

Also, Iv been having the cold start issue where the engine either doesnt start first time or seems to struggle but then runs fine.

Could this be related?

I appreciate any replies.

Thank you

Sam

How many litres of fuel is this for 250 miles

Well the punto has a 45 litre tank so that would make it almost exactly 25mpg. But! The low fuel light comes on very early in the punto so it depends how far the owner drives after the light comes on. Does the car not have a trip computer? This will saw how many mpg it is giving.

Sorry missed a few details!

The car was serviced 6 months ago

This is on a full tank until it is severely low (way past fuel light coming on)

I always put a full tank in until it clicks off twice.

250 mile is extremely low and has led to me putting in a full tank at least every week.

Could this be map sensor or sommething like that do you think.

Will check tyre pressures today and post here.

Mines a tjet and I usually get an average of 30mpg, something's up.. On a full tank from actually empty!.. It lasts me about two weeks with a lot of trips to Cambridge which is 20miles etc.. Have you added anything to your engine?.. Filters etc

Lol. I get about 400 miles to a tank, exact same car. 450 if economical.

When the light comes on there's always about another 100 miles in the tank I've found.

How much is it costing you to fill up from empty? £55-£60? If it's any less, you're not doing it right. If it is, you are doing it right and you're car is sick. When was it last serviced?

Need to check how much fuel is going in, fuel gauges are early linear and you can normally get more in Fuel to filler neck capacity etc, filling until pump clicks also doesn't mean tank is full.

Fill tank to brim of filler neck, then make a note of mileage covered on the fill up after and the number of miles covered.

The car was serviced in april this year.

When I fill up it costs me ~ £51.

I might add that this is the first time I have ever checked my trip counter after reseting so the consumption may have been like this for a while.

Maybe I should see how much I get out of the next tank? Maybe it is due to the heat or something, at a guess.

Should cost more than that, but you'd still see at least 300 with 35-40 litres in the tank.

Check your instant consumption on a flat bit of dual carriageway at 65mph. Should be mid 50s.

Either you're a terrible driver or your car is sick. The outside temperature only makes a very slight difference.

reset the trip when you next fill. after your usual week remember the litres put back in to fill(make sure the same as last time e.g. 2 clicks then stop) then google a mpg checker you dont need to fill to brim to check you could check after 10 litres or 40 litres the more you do the better average you will get.

You mention that you have "the cold start issue"? The weather hasnt exactly gone cold yet has it? Have you checked your oil and water lately?
From my experience a car not starting 1st time for no reason is usually a sign of a failed head gasket ;)

Didn't think about a leaky tank!

But yeah, no point in asking on here, could be a quick, cheap fix or you could be looking at a reasonably large bill. Whatever it is, get it to a garage.
