General Front spring broken

Just replaced 2 front springs on an 03 Merc 270 CDi. Both were snapped in the same place. Car only done 73K and owned by an elderly couple who live near me. Problem on the Mercs seems to be the level of spring compression, its a big spring compressed into a small space.
