Technical Fiat Panda 2006 steering wheel problem

Thank you guys for your comments. It is really appreciated. Over weekend the issue got worse. We had one fault code related to the battery so we swapped the battery to a known believed battery (but it wasn't new). We cleaned the terminals when we changed the battery and we will clean the individual positives and negatives to the main terminals of the battery once again. Swapping the battery seems like made a dramatic improvement, however we saw the light again but it turned itself off so possibly it is related to the standing battery. We took it for a drive to charge the battery and we didn't see the light for the rest of the journey. We will continue to monitor it.

We also checked the charging voltage before the journey with the Fluke meter which read 14.2V. We will check this again tomorrow as well. The plan is to remove a steering column cowling and clean the connectors with contact cleaner and reassemble. Is there any reason not to do this e.g. will it lose its calibration?

Also identified the ground behind the battery and it has a Delphi label on it (Part number 00468179840(CAVO MASSA 5NF). We believe it to be a ground cable which bolts into the shock absorber surround. I will try to attach a picture if I can.

We will check the alternator belt tension.

To clarify the battery comments - the battery swapped each year were from a known local scrapyard, not brand new. Thank you for the battery recommendation. :)

there's two earths for the steering

1 for the electronic control systems only
2 just for the motor itself

The motor should be directly on top of the battery. Fiat are notorious for chopping and changing wires and colours but doubt this will have been changed

Can I ask what this is please - what effects it causes etc. ?

intermittently the steering light comes on with or without loss of assist

Normally clears itself if you switch the ignition off and back on again

connect diagnostic cable and Read the stored codes

It will always (well almost) either be a power code or a torque sensor code.

This is misleading. As a error code for the torque sensor can also be caused by a power issue

its happened often enough for this fault to conclude reading code is wasting time

As is testing the battery with a battery test.

Hi guys, thanks for your continued support and ideas.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the steering module ground please. As sometimes the light will go on but the steering is fully functional (even in city mode).

Thank you

not for 100% never had to find it myself

pretty sure in a description it reads as a stud in the footwell

let me go and double check

My daughters 2009 Panda 1.1 Active Eco (36,000 miles) had a problem last year where the steering fail light came on for a few seconds. There was no error code when I checked so I charged the battery and the fault did not reappear.

At the beginning of this month, she reported the fault again, this time with the steering going stiff. I took the car for a test drive, but couldn't get the fault to show despite driving in circles around an empty carpark 20 times each way! The staff at Pizza Hut thought I was mad! Still no error codes shown, recharged the battery. Fault disappeared for 3 days.

Checked for errors with two different code readers - no code. Cleaned negative earth strap earth point, and the battery terminals. Fault disappeared for 2 days.

At this stage I was convinced that it was the EPS, but took the battery for testing (94% - pretty good for a 5 year old battery). I refitted the battery and took the car to my friendly MOT garage where he put his code reader on it - and after quite a while testing it eventually showed C1002.

Searched for EPS repair services and eventually settled on BBA Remanufacturing which I found on eBay offering the repair of my unit for £195 with a no fix no fee and a lifetime warranty.

I had a few concerns as when I looked on Trustpilot for BBA Reman it only showed 4 bad reviews whereas on eBay they had good feedback. I've got to say though I received excellent service from them and good communication at all times. The Fiat Panda EPS was collected Monday afternoon and received back before lunch on Thursday.

Panda all back together and daughter picked up from work in her car that afternoon.

Fault hopefully gone.

too late now, I sure BBA Reman will be fine
but 99.9% are a simple and cheap repair

Both of our Pandas have the Yuasa HSB012 Silver. Bought with next day delivery from Tanya Batteries. There are cheaper options but IMO, the few £ you save is not worth the cost. But I do draw the line at Halfords prices.

Tanya £57 + £8 delivery.

Halfords £103
