The great beauty with the Fiat 500 is that it's free from unnecessary design, it's just pure function like a train or some other practical vehicle. Compare it to the Willys "Jeep" for example.
Btw who designed the ugly fat sister 500L ?

IMO it's the Panda that triumphs function over form.

The 500 is a stylised Panda, and in the process has both gained cost & lost funtionality.

The 500 was clearly designed to be cutesy and stylish and appeal to those who want to stand out from the boring superminis on the market ("stand out" doesn't really work since every other car on the road seems to be a 500 - no bad thing though). The panda is all about functionality, and style was clearly a secondary consideration. Both great cars in my mind, but for different reasons.

Just saw my first 500L out on the roads round Mid Devon. It was on a really straight bit of road and to be honest I saw it coming a long way off. Surprisingly recognisable even at this early stage!

Was a red one with a white roof; it looked great IMO.

I honestly think that if you can separate the marketing crap associated with the 500L, you might find that your opinion softens. It won't be everyone's cup of tea for sure, but it isn't half as bad as some make out.

The 500 is not at Panda, it's a sleek coupé/hatchback and the Panda i a small station wagon looking like the overly designed 500L. Sharing the same Fiat mini platform has not much to do with the design above it.

I saw one today going east on the M4, it was also in red but I dint think it had a white roof. But anyway, I still didn't like it, i cant describe it. It looked overley busy for a car that size and just didn't seem to gel together nicely really

The Panda.....Over Designed

:ROFLMAO:

The Panda was 4-5 years prior to the 500 in design also.

Whats your take on the VW Beetle over the Golf out of interest

I never liked the new Beetle, to fat :) looks better than a japanese car though. I have owned a couple of 1302/1303 in the '90s, unfortunately to rusty by then. The old VW had it's charm in the nice boxer engine, of course completely outdated by now.

Willy's Jeep. Saw one refurbished on a UK TV show (Wheeler Dealers) 3 weeks ago. Quite an impressive vehicle, can fully understand how it stood the test of time from WW2.(y)

Well I've just taken a look at the 500L Trekking and I can say that it looks just great, especially in bright yellow. (y):D

Yellow looks good but I can quote something from my memory banks way back which was reported in the press.

The Fire Service in York were conscious of safety to personnel during the hours of darkness and felt that the traditional colour of Fire Engines (Red) did not help in the matter and required to be more visible.

As a result they sprayed 1 appliance YELLOW which stood out better in the dark and enhanced their safety.

However, in the Firefighters 'downtime' when they went about cleaning their bright yellow appliance, a number of Firefighters complained of feeling sick.

Eventually a psychologist came into the equation and it was scientifically proved that being in visual contact with bright yellow for certain periods of time, brought about feelings of Nausea. Needless to say they resprayed the appliance back to RED and the symptoms went away.

The moral is : Beware all of ye who own YELLOW cars.
