I fill up as soon as the orange light flicks, I don't take it very much into the red, not my style, first flicker, it gets brimmed!

Optimax is 89.9p per litre here.

And no, I'm not constantly thrashing my car, it's normal driving, I can assure you!

Try this...

Find some silly fault to put your car in the garage and insist on a courtesy car, drive that around and see how you do, then at least you'll know how your driving style effects combined efficiency.

Stiloboy has a point about short journeys too, I know my economy is a bit pants untill the engine is up to temperature.

I never managed much more than 26mpg in my 1.6 - which I always thought was poor for a 1.6 - perhaps it's just not a very economical unit engineering/design wise?

Yep, no problems - I drove a 1.2 as a courtesy car a few weeks back

Whats wrong with 85mph in 3rd? Stilo 1.2 does it, and so did my old Saxo VTS. Why can't the 1.6 do 85 in 3rd?

Jesus only 289miles per tank...... i've got 240 miles done on my current tank and i've not used half a tank yet, thats averaging 46.5mpg and yes 85mph in 3rd several times this week!

Appologies for pic quality, but as you can see less than half a tank used, about 200-odd miles covered and 46.5mpg and thats after a frantic dash to Mcarthur Glen via half of Scotland so i was getting pretty pee-d off and tanking it!

ive seen out 1.6 say 250miles at the half way mark a few times. oh, 85 in third, no problem, doesnt go to the read line until 90 ish.

What you doing at Mcarthur glen, be the worst time of year to be going there for some clothes

Went for a final Christmas shop with a mate, by the time we'd got there we decided on the Chinese buffet and headed home! Feckin crash in Edinburgh, so like smart arses we decided to head via Kincadine, hmmm a road i know like the back of my eyeballs! I know its there, but not much else! Still it was an OK drive.
