Have swapped engine in my Panda and it will not start. Was told I needed to change crank pulley from old engine to work with ECU. The new engine oil pump is different to old one and they are not interchangeable so can't fit old crank pulley and sensor. Is there any way to reprogram the ECU to work with new sensor. Urgent advice needed.

Normally we would say use the ECU that goes with the new engine. You may need to get it "virginised to have it work happily with the car's existing electronics.

More details needed, old engine, new engine, etc. Pictures of the two sensor types would be really helpful.

isn't that helpful. The oil pump is different. Different to what. You can see its different. We can't. Why for an engine swap is the sump off.

lets start at the beginning

what year is your car
what engine number was the original Its stamped on the front of the block lefthand side under the exhaust as long as its a 1.1 or 1.2
what engine number is the new

I not getting a good feeling though
pump and sump different. crank pulley and sensor will not swap over. Sounds like a completely different engine ? from the very little information we have.

As the 169 Panda used three different 1.2 engines over its life, the original square oil cap, then round cap 60hp and round cap 70hp, even sourcing a 'Panda' engine can result in differences.

A 1.2 FIRE was also fitted in Punto and 500, and a few others, and often with different quoted power outputs.

As actual Panda engines are plentiful, I think sourcing a correct one would be easier than trying to make a wrong one work.

Until we get the following information there is nothing much we can do to help -

  • Age and model of the car
  • What engine was originally in the car
  • What engine he wants to put into the car
  • What work he has done on the engine.
