Hi. I have a 2004 panda with a 1242. 8 valve engine code 188a4000 which is dying. What other engines are a straight swap and is it much of a job to use an engine from an automatic. Tia

Cheapest and easiest would be to get an engine from a breakers - they're cheap and plentiful. Make sure you use the crank pulley from your car as the timing marks on those vary hugely from model to model, so keep the one that you know works with your ECU and timing pickup.

The 1,4 block will bolt straight onto your gearbox, should the bigger engine be available and easier for you. Would go well too. Steer clear of engines with auto boxes, as they are bound to be more complex to hook up to your driveline and you shouldn't need to either as 1.2 FIRE's are very common in breakers. I bought one a few years ago for a project build and it was about £250 delivered on a pallet. Looked in good nick too.

An engine from a 500 with same engine code should fit no problem too.

If you have found a decent engine with the same code from an auto that is a robotised manual gear box (duologic) that is a straight swop too.

Reccomend fitting new clutch kit friction plate , pressure plate, release bearing and slave cylinder at the same time. It's very little extra work on top of engine swop.
Only fit a clutch kit from know good brand , valeo, luk

Hi :)

panda 169 of that era is more akin to the old puntos than most 500's.. they have VVT

Auto engine is probably identical.. but ancilliaries might want swapping ;)

Thanks for advice guys. Have purchased an engine from an automatic will let you know how I get on.

Have swapped engine and all ancillaries but it will not start. Any ideas please.

Bit of a vague problem report - need more detail.

Checks:
Are all the plug leads actually on correctly.
Are the coil plugs on the correct coils.
Crank sensor fitted, unbroken and plugged in.
All disturbed electrical connections checked.
Battery positive cable properly connected to starter.
Battery negative cable properly connected to gearbox and car body.
Battery fully charged, not just left for the three weeks since first post.

Details:
When key turned to 'on',
Do battery and oil warning lamps light.
Does immobiliser light come on, and go out.
Does fuel pump run for a few seconds.

When key turned to 'start',
Does engine turn over.
Does immobiliser light illuminate, steady or flashing.
Does oil light go out.
Does it try to fire - occasional coughs.
Does it spin easily - too easily, or sound similar to the old one.
Does the clock reset to zero, or flash, or both.

Others may add more to this.
