hi im john. i have a fiat punto sx75 mark1 r reg. car packed up other wk goin ok then just died on me. would`t start again. bottom end still turning but top end is not. cam belt still on and not broke. any ideas on what could be if it worth repairing would be most gratefull as had loads of work done on it and just sailed through a mot. cheers.

hi,
that sounds a bit odd ,as the cam-belt is designed as the Weak-link of the system,

how are you determining that bottoms' turning and the top's NOT ?,

have you pulled off ALL the timing belt covers and rock the car back + forth in 2nd gear,
then you should see what moves + what doesn't,

try asking in mk1 Punto section too,( I've not worked on a 75,)

If the cambelt is turning the cam pulley, but the camshaft is not turning, then either the camshaft is broken, or the drive between the camshaft and pulley is broken. Remove the cam cover and look. You may need to align the crank timing mark and remove belt and cam pulley to find why there is no connection.

Pull the cover.

Either one of the pulleys is not driving (could have lost the fake woodruff key and bolt not be tight enough) or the tensioner has disengaged or failed catastrophically, or the belt has lost teeth.

Belts usually loose teeth because someone has either fitted the wrong belt (at least two different belt pitches available) or the wrong water pump (likewise). But I'd not rule out old age.
