Technical Engine layout

Howdy everybody!

I am taking my driving test in my Panda Active. As I'm sure you know, there are a few show me/tell me questions before each test, such as 'Tell me how you would check for the correct amount of oil/brake fluid/windscreen washer fluid' etc.

Problem is, I'm not mechanically minded! I know where the dipstick is and how to check that, but the rest is a mystery to me.

Does anyone have diagtam of the Active engine with each reservoir identified, please? It would be a big help!

If nobody has a pic/diagram, can you just explain as clearly as poss'?

I would say use the manual, but I don't think a diagram is included. I'll check.

They are, yes. But in which order? I'm guessing the oil fuller cap is next to the dipstick.

the above is from a 1.2 panda....i think pretty much the same

the big clear tank, with the pink liquid and blue/yellow top is for your coolant

behind the headlight, cunningly designed to scrape your knuckles is the filler for the screenwash

the black square cap, in front of the red dipstick is the oil filler

the small clear plastic tank close to the windscreen, white top is for....bugger cant remember brake or power steering.....

and i dont have a photo of the other side of the bay

edit: and of course the huge plastic box in the middle is your air filter

brake fluid should be clear plastic tank on the right somewhere

Wouldn't it be best to get your driving instructor to show you where the relivent bits are?

Here's a scan from the owner's manual for the 1.1 engine (below - click to see it bigger)

Starting at the front, the numbers in the diagram are...

[5] Radiator/coolant is larger of the blue tops inside the front left side (as you look at it with the bonnet open. In the photo from Jai this was a separate tank, which is fitted if air con is installed)

[4] Screenwash is smaller blue top to the left of the coolant filler, and is marked with the same symbol as the washer control on the steering wheel

The dipstick (as you know) is the big red 'hook' towards the back left of the engine, and the [1] oil filler is the black square rubber 'plug' on top of the engine just in front of the dipstick.

The small white 'bottle' at the back left of the engine bay is fluid for the clutch (the Panda uses a hydraulic clutch) -- not labelled in the diagram

[2] Near the front right is the battery (big black thing with wires attached!), and behind that is [3] a clear plastic rectangular tank which is the brake fluid.

[3] and [5] are clearish plastic, and have 'max' and 'min' levels marked so you can see how full they are without taking the tops off.

Also there, to right of battery, a big black plastic box with some of the car's fuses: the rest are under the dash above the accelerator pedal.

That should just about cover it. Good luck!

It's also worth mentioning that if you get stuck, each of the caps has a symbol on it to tell you what it is. I think the show me/tell me is a good part of the test, but I'm wondering why there isn't scope to allow you to refer to the handbook which is the best reference material available to you for that particular car.

I've heard of other driving instructors colour coding caps to help their pupils remember where everything is, which isn't especially useful after you pass the test!

I presume that's after translation from Italian - the other pictures say 'with climate', so I guess 'with heater' means only with a heater, or no air con...

Thanks Alan. Forums like these can sometimes become 'sounding boards', but keeping them full of 'useful' stuff helps make them worthwhile and encourages others to join in.

Hello!

Thanks to everyone for their kind replies, especially Herts Hillhopper and Jai!

I cannot ask my instructor, as the Panda is my mum's car. I am going to take the test in mum's car, as I've been driving that much more than my ADI's Megane.

I've saved the pictures in this thread for reference, and I'll pop the bonnet up tomorrow.

Thanks again.....I might just stick around as mum is 'giving' me the Panda once I pass!!
