Yea there are several ecus over the car

The engine ecu does speed if you dont have abs
If you have abs, the abs ecu provides the info and passes it onto the body computer via canbus

no my car doesn't have the ABS, my speed sensor in on top of the gearbox which i did replace but didn't solve anything. I have checked battery and alternator and on volts side of things they are fine 12.8v with engine off and 14.1v with engine running, i have been told that amps matter as well but that it varies from car to car so need to find out what amps my battery is supposed to be for my car and check that.

Today i plan to go over the circuit as much as i can with a multimeter and try to see if i can find any brakes in wires etc.... thank you to everyone thats helped so far hopefully i will get there soon. any more help, info, tips etc... are all greatly appreciated :)

Hi there, I didn't read all your posts with a fine toothed comb but I just wanted to say that I feel your pain, I have had the 'dashboard display disco' with my 1.2 active for two years now. It is unfathomable, even after a 'bad earth' was fixed which I was told was a common fault with these cars (and possible just to do away with with no ill effect), it was and still is doing it. It causes a lot of stress as you don't know whether it is a genuine warning or not but before you get to it the thing goes off again anyway. At one point there were 3 lights displaying warnings! In the end I have just ignored them. It had the auto sparky scratching his head.
good luck

I thought i would come and update now i have this problem finally sorted after a £195 bill for only 3 hours (apparent) work at a diagnostics garage.

My speed sensor was never at fault it ended up being a plug in the fusebox one of the wires was not joined to anything each end was "offset" to each other ergo no full circuit. The garage then joined the 2 wires bypassing the plug (easiest way to do it) and then my speedo worked fine and once that was sorted all of my power steering came back light went off city button now works etc...
i do still have the random misfire but i am pretty sure i know what that is and will be sorting that soon.
i dont know why this wire wasn't joined but we think the car may of had an engine change before i bought it.
anyway thank you to everyone for all their help it was very much appreciated :)
