Hi folks, tecnical question here, my uncle has a 2003 ducato Kon Tiki 2.8 turbo diesel. the engine rattles when it's being driven and for a wee while when it idles then goes away but as soon as you rev it, it starts again, sounds maybe like a tappet or something? is this normal? also it seems very sluggish to drive i know its a big van but the acceleration seems pretty poor and if your lucky you'll get 70 on the motorway, Any fellow owners give some comparison/advice? thanks very much.

My 2006 2.8JTD goes well. 110 kph is easy enough but not up significant hills. Mine has a resonance at around 70 kph but I suppose that is different to what you are speaking about.

Hi
You should have a lot more power than that on a recent trip to Spain I was averaging 80-90 mph.
Some of the big hills over the mountains had me down to third but I could still hold 60 mph.
Is it smoking? I’m thinking dodgy injector

There's no smoke at all it also guzzles fuel as in you maybe get 80 miles out of a quarter tank, totally dies on hills too alot more than what PeterM suggested, i had it in the scottish highlands and was down to 30-40 in 3rd it just wouldn't pull any more.

Has it always been slow?
What sort of mileage has it got?
As I said mine would do 80mph all day but at that speed I would only get about 18mpg.
It sounds like the turbo may be playing up, check for split or loose hoses leading to the turbo.
If the engine has to work harder to maintain speed it will use more derv.

Thanks M30SJM i'll take a look over the next few days and see what i find

The post linked to doesn't address the issue of the noise, electro injectors can get very noisy with age. An old injector will have poor atomisation and the diesel will ignite at the top of the stroke causing knocking. A bad injector may also coat the bore with diesel causing wear leading to low compression and bad combustion.

Do you have excess smoke under accelleration or at startup
How long does the starter turn before the engine starts
How does it start cold?

Using a length of pipe to your ear like a stethoscope try and isolate the source of the noise.

it starts first turn of the key every time, hot or cold, no smoke on start up or acceleration, also its only covered a miniscule 22,000 miles from new
