Saw an Imprezza yesterday evening with a white LED in the air scoop on the bonnet - it looked kinda weird - and OK at the same time!

For me
DRL are always on, and they are much better then my poxy little sidelights tbh.... they are rubbish

So for me then cover me upto dusk - when at that point Dipped are on

Oh ok gotcha I'm not totally against them I just think its one of hose things that either look really good or really naff

As long as you've seen them, and the car they're attached to then they've done their job

hence why I suggested the LED in the side light idea as you get the best of both worlds - LED brightness without having to fit more lights. Granted they won't switch off when you put your dips on plus your rears will be on aswell. It's something I'm thinking about on my Stilo as I have two sides in each lamp at the front so would work quite well

But you're missing the point that this won't do the same job. DRLs are designed to emit a certain type of light, at certain angles and certain brightnesses, something an LED sidelight bulb simply cannot do.

You will not see an LED sidelight bulb on in a car, coming at you at 50-60mph with the sun rising or setting behind it. DRLs are designed so that you will.

Not disagreeing at some setups look gash, but what I'm also saying is there are proper DRLs, like the Ring Automotive range, which are £60+, and then nasty styling lights / LED strips for £3 delivered on eBay which cannot be confused as being the same thing, as they simply are not.

Yes I see what you mean. I must admit to being in the dark (sorry about the pun! ) and very ignorant to DRLs as up until I read this thread I genuinely though that DRLs were nothing more than bright LEDs on a strip. I didn't even know they switched off when you turned your dips on! hence why I couldn't understand why LED side lights wouldn't suffice as a good substitute. Now I've seen the light (ohhh there's another one!!) I may well look into doing something myself

It came across as sarcastic, although in hindsight looks like it wasn't supposed to be, so dislike removed
