You do realise that the alternator doesnt charge the battery up, it only keeps the charge in the battery to a constant level!I never knew this until I worked at Central Auto Supplies! Dont worry Ive left there now coz it sucked (n)
Sorry I couldnt help much on the main subject!

if you try hitting the black box bit at the back of the engine (behind the airbox) and then try starting. if that works, it's the multi-function relay on it's way out...

can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition to the first click?

key will still come out with no battery in the car, she is in a mood an not doing it right, make sure its in park
no because the imobilizer locks the key in the ignition if you dont put the knob bit in the hole thing :) and the car seems to have no power so obviously imobilizer isnt working so its like she hasnt put the knob bit in.

could be so many things.

SO:-
it turns over, and makes usual engine sound, no metal scraping or nasty loose noises.
theres fuel in it
its not the cambelt
the battery is now dead.

1) recharge your battery
2) check fuel pump fuse (this 5p part crippled our just serviced audi, and cost a grand total of two weeks and £480 to fix, mainline dealer garages suck donkey cock).
3) check spark on all 4 plugs
4) check injector operation (you will only have 1 LOL)
5) err after that I can't think I'm too tired, I'll add to the list tommorrow
