Off Topic Crashed my stilo tonight

You guys have really really cheap prices on cars, you should thank your queen for that. :p

The calculations are simple. The new car was sold at 19800 E in 2002, and according to the depreciation chart I still have 26% of it left after all these years. This is somewhere around 5000E. The insurance company will repair the car up to 85% of its insurance value, which makes it somewhere around 4000 E.

So the value of the car in Romania is still 5000E, even after all these years.

I could too buy a not so good Stilo for 4000E, but it would be in very very bad shape and not have all the optionals mine has. :)

Insurance is around 650-700 E per year, fully comp., and other taxes on it are around 400E. This includes liability insurance.

Need I say anything about the salary or gas prices? :)

Wow, didn't know car prices are so high in Romania, I bought mine when it was a 2 year old car for 5500E.. I would love to sell it for the same price over there neighbour :D Hope your car gets fixed soon (y)

There are a lot of people in Romania that register cars in Bulgaria just to avoid the taxes. :)

The value of the cars rises because of this as well. When registering my car after buying it from Frankfurt, I had to pay 700E as a first registration tax, and that sum rises considerably according to engine size, EURO capability (EURO4 was mine) and CO2 emissions.

A 2 year old car loses 10% of it's value on the market, but it depends on depreciation really. You can still only get a golf 4 for 7000 EUROS, and I still don't understand why the heck they are keeping their value so well.

I think the reason second hand cars are so cheap in the UK (and Germany) is because so many cars (about 60% in the UK) are bought or leased by companies for their staff to either do the job with or as a perk. Companies usually change their cars every 1 or 2 years so there's always too many second hand cars on the market. Prices are cheap due to "supply and demand" (too much supply and too little demand).

About 4 years ago I wanted to buy a cheap car in Greece. Cheapest I could find was a 1980s Fiat Uno. Bumpers were hanging off, oil leaks from the engine, rust everywhere, there was even a rust hole right through the side of the passenger door. Cheapest the dealer would sell it for was 1000€ (EUR). In the UK it would probaly have cost £35.

Yes Dave, this is all true. The other difference is the standard of living. What there is a standard condition over here is a caprice. Owning any car in Romania exceeds the minimum wage in gas maintenance and insurance. Heck, 1 full tank of petrol is 80% of the minimum wage.

Anyway, the story is very long and sad, hopefully I will get my car fixed and all will be right.

In Czech rep. MY2002 Stilo now costs about £2200 - £3000.
I heard about Greece too - terrible expensive!

FINALLY!

After almost 3 months of wait and many many issues with insurance and service, my car is now complet and will take it home hopefully at the end of the week :)

The repair ended up costing 2450£.

I have the original Magneti Marelli headlights and all the other parts are aftermarket. For a car that is now 9 years old, I don't argue. At least it is fixed.

Yes well they had to change the wing once because it didn't fit. If you look closely there is a gap between the left wing and the hood, 2-3 mm bigger than the front wing, but the car is drivable and looks good and that's all I care for. :)

it looks good!, glad its back on the road...

My only concern is, the side which had the crash, the headlight gap between the bonnet is larger than the other side...

the bonnet and wing are held in place by the "wing fletch"

Whereas the bumper is held in place and centred by the chassis legs

my suspicion is there is a gap on the N/S because the chassis leg has been bent down in the crash and not straightened...not something id worry about, but just an observation.

your lucky as i lost my baby in 2009 after a argument with a sheet of ice and a high kurb. all the damage on my car was passinger side lower wish, driveshaft snapped, slight damage to the wing. the insurance company wrote it straight off. even the tire hadnt deflated!!!
the sad part about mine was i had owned her from new, oh well i love the mw more lol.
it just shows that the car done its job effectively, on a more solid built car (without crumple zones) you would have had felt it a lot more and could have been injured - whiplash etc.
its always sad to see an stilo smashed. nice one mate

Looks good, a long but worthwhile wait.
I am just interested to know who fault was the accident technically?
In Austria any car older that 5 years old cannot have full insurance other than offered by huge premiums so if an accident was my fault I would be screwed. Only the other party could claim damages.

Yes you are right :( I am just seeing this now. They took about 80£ to straighten both chassis legs they say, and it's not really straight now is it? I think this had to be done otherwise the bumper wouldn't match with the wing right, so it's the bloody aftermarket wing again. Anyway, I think it's a compromise I will have to make and that's it.

Technically my fault mate. (open schematics 1). This is the schematics of the crash. I had a car and a bus in front of me and was now slowing down because I knew the bus was about to brake to go into the station. This created a gap between my car and the car in front so the taxi driver thought oh look at the bloody idiot braking that lane is faster so he switched lanes in front of me only to see the bus and car brake so he had to brake very hard to try and avoid. I could not avoid him because he was now too close (open schematics 2). At least this is what I remember.

Because he was able to completely switch lanes he was not guilty and so I was guilty because I apparently did not keep distance between cars.

It really depends on what you call huge premium. :) Mine is around 700E per year and yes, you can insure cars up to 12 years old for fully comprehensible, it's just that your insured value will go down with age.

Thanks vladof currently I will pay about €840 per year, maybe less but for full cover if the car is over 5 years old I am looking at about €4000 per year. Not in anyway affordable right now.
